There are ATM cards that aren't debit cards, or at least there used to be.
An ATM card can typically be used as a debit card at a merchant who uses any of the ATM networks that appear on the back of the card. True debit cards will have a Visa or MasterCard emblem on them. You can use them at any merchant who accepts those credit cards.
My wife and I kept separate checking accounts (each with a debit card). We would transfer money back and forth when needed. We had a savings account for when our checking accounts got to high we would transfer money to it for safety reasons meaning no debit card nor checking transactions on it.
She passed and I still do the same. A checking (debit) account and a savings account for holding money in.
I have way too many bank accounts. I chase bank account bonuses and recently just went through a string of them. Currently have 7 checking accounts and 3 savings accounts - none of the savings are at banks that I have checking. It's a lot to manage but I'm super organized and don't pay fees on any of them.
Checking and savings, although honestly it makes almost no difference. The interest rate is .10% higher on the savings account. About two-thirds of my emergency fund sits in the savings account and the other third in checking plus fluctuations for things like quarterly tax payments. I haven't touched the savings account to either add or take out money in years. I probably should move it to a higher interest savings account but meh, too lazy not enough of a difference.
