Does anyone know of any student loan forgiveness programs for those in the human/social services field?

I have been working with abused and disabled children for five years now- and while it's very rewarding work, I can't pay my student loans back. With the rising costs of EVERYTHING but my salary - I need help getting these federal loans forgiven. I'm in my 40's and at this rate, I'll be paying them well into my 60's if I don't do something soon. (I need a new car desperately - but "I'm driving my $400/mo student loan payment" instead.)

Does anyone know if there's any help out there????
Thanks!

Let me see if I understand.

You borrowed money to go to school knowing full well that you were expected to pay it back. Then pursued a career that is rewarding but does not pay well.

Now you are looking for a way the rest of us can pay off your liabilities incurred because of your decisions.

I am not really inclined to pay and wonder how many other are.

There are programs that do this for people working in fields that need workers.

Default Looking for help - not criticism

I chose to give back to my community by picking a field that might make a difference. I didn't say I didn't want to pay back the loans, it's getting increasingly difficult.

Come on now.

There are some forgiveness programs, but they usually involve working somewhere where there is a great need for your services like Indian reservations and rural areas.

Any program would likely be through your employer. Student loans carry through bankruptcy and everything. Thats how lenders are able to give students decent rates.

A few questions:

When were the loans granted?
Are the loans consolidated?
What types of loans do you have?

Well, for one, you can cut out the internet access that you're using to type these posts.....that's one way of saving you money to dedicate to your loans..

Don't get mad at us. You created the problem.

Start figuring out ways to SACRIFICE to pay this on your own.

Teaching in certain subject areas will entitle a person loan forgiveness as well. It is generally done to entice people to go into fields which have worker shortages.

I must admit, I agree. Rather than looking for a way out of your obligation, try looking for a way to pay it off. Rather than a new car, how about a $1,200 one? I founf two for my step sons. They were Escorts with under 100,000 miles and they've been great cars. Or maybe look ways to live cheaper- cut the cable, rent a smaller apartment...

There are ways to do this.

I don't want to be as harsh as some of these other guys, but c'mon.

I entered college in the the 1980-82 recession. Interest rates were 18% and my parents, an architect and a real estate agent, weren't going to pay for anything.

So I went to school from 8 to 3 and worked from 3 to midnight. It wasn't easy. In fact, it was pretty awful, but I made it through in four years. And I got my degree in English. And I never took out a student loan.

That being said, your life is a series of choices. If you really want to pay off that student loan, then it's time for you to get a second job, whether waiting tables, doing freelance work, or delivering newspapers. That's about the only way you can do it.

But taking on an obligation that's taxpayer subsidized, and now trying to squirm out of it? Don't you think that's a trifle unfair to all those other people who took out student loans and managed to pay them off?
