It is a co-dominant "morph" (color/pattern mutation), which means every egg from a Mojave has a 50/50 chance of being Mojave too - when paired with a normal Ball Python. Here's a detailed explanation on BP genetics, since I don't know how to explain it well: A Lesson in Basic Genetics
Interesting. I saw a film on Animal Planet yesterday, about a python, that was over 10 feet, running around Miami! How long do those critters live? Do they just keep getting bigger if you keep feeding them? Good thing Jasper does not do that. I would have a ginormous cat!
But what is different about a mojave? To my untrained eye they all look alike.
Sorry, I thought you were asking how they become mojaves, LOL. The difference is in their coloring & pattern, the mojaves being more "chocolate" colored with distinctive side patterns (keyhole & heart-shaped) and blushing (faded spots)... there can be variations within each type, but it's pretty clear when you're looking at anything besides a normal. Better if I show you, and hopefully you can see it:
Here are 5 normal babies with 1 Mojave - can you tell which one is different?
Normal
Mojave
And those two babies (normal then mojave) about 8-10 months later

It most certainly wasn't a BALL Python, since they usually top out around 4-5ft... and no, they don't keep growing forever. My largest Ball Python is maybe 5'3", and weighs around 2500g - she's a full-grown adult, and won't get bigger except when gravid (pregnant). They typically live around 20-25 years in captivity, but can sometimes live to 30ish.
You were probably seeing a Burmese Python on TV, which is MUCH larger at 13-18ft minimum. And thanks to irresponsible owners who get these giant snakes, and then release them when they reach full size, the rest of us snake owners are getting a bad name. I wish people would do some research before getting a snake!!!
Btw, these three are now beginning to make their grand entrance!
How the heck did DOG hair get in there? Yeesh.
