Hey.
Its a terrible situation in my house. My Golden Retriever is 10 and just got diagnosed with cancer(malignant). The cancer lumps are in chucks on his neck region. On top of that he has stopped walking. He was gradually becoming slow but now his hind legs won't take the weight. Doctor says he's got arthritis and the bone marrow is weak because of the cancer.

Yesterday the doctor asked us to make a decision. We bought the chemo pills and gave him yesterday but he was miserable. Woudn't eat or drink, both gums were stuck. There are a few other tablets and I feel his body won't be able to take it.

Now he is 10 and on reading online I find Goldens have a usual 10-12 span and to go at 10 isn't all that bad. We are thinking of not giving him chemo. Doctors said he could go in a month or 6 or may even live a year.

Any suggestions?

Someone once told me it was better to put a pet to sleep a day too early than a day too late. You know what needs to be done. Your dog should not suffer.

Sending you strength and hugs.

I used to work at a vet clinic, and many people came in asking us what they should do. I will tell you exactly what the vet told them:

Only you can make that decision.

Do what you truly believe is right for your dog.

Yes. I've had many dogs through the years, but with one in particular, a beautiful white greyhound, I waited too long. It haunts me. I feel I failed him.

Based on your opening post, rishi, please do the humane thing and have the pet put to sleep.

Save your dog from more pains and let him go. He is suffering.

I agree with the others. Although we want to keep our beloved pets as long as we can, waiting too long because you can't make a decision to put them down will haunt you.

If the light and joy has gone out of a dog's eyes, the kindest act you can do if you love your pet is to end his suffering. OP, please don't prolong his suffering. I'm so sorry to say these words. We've all been there. (hugs)

If the dog can't walk and is in probable pain you should do what is right for your friend. There is no need to allow the animal to suffer.

I have always looked at the decision to put an animal down along with the feeling of great sadness/grief the price you pay for the years of joy an animal gave you. The kindest thing you can do at this point is to help them pass on.

Please, do what is best for him not for you. You will also suffer watching him suffer. He gave you many years of love and happiness; it is time to let him go.

Bless your heart, this is such a difficult thing to do, but you will have peace that you did the right thing for him.

Put him down. If you cannot bear it, ask a friend or family member to do it for you. It's the least you can do for a dog who has been your faithful companion for 10 years. It's always sad but with the end of suffering comes relief, for both of you.

I agree with all that has been said. Don't let your baby be in pain.

(((Hugs))) to you.
