Hi. I will be attending grad school at UPenn this fall and need to find a rental in a good area. Additionally, I am at a loss with the Philly public schools. Based on the stats I've read, I would not feel comfortable placing my elementary age child in a Philly school.
I would appreciate any suggestions you may have on neighborhoods, rental communities and schools. Must be car-commutable to UPenn. I really need assistance.
Thanks in advance.

Look for rentals in Bala Cynwyd, Narberth, Ardmore, or Wynwood, all have great schools. In South Jersey look at Cherry Hill, also has excellent schools.

You are going to grad school and I wonder if you looked at Grad Towers on the Penn campus.....

Narberth would be my next choice because the train stops close to everything but you will have to walk a few blocks from 30th Street station. Narberth school district is good but not great......Your next step may be looking into a private school such as Episcopal Academy on City Ave. in the Overbrook area....

Penn will help you find a school and housing....Go into the Franklin Building and just ask around where is the Bursar's Office. There is one gentleman in there who has been working for Penn since my wife worked at Penn some 12 years ago. Unfortunately I do not remember his real name only his nick name + I can't post that here.....

Bring your checkbook. Episcopal is more expensive than most colleges for a semester. For the record Episcopal is now located on 252 in Newtown Square, the former Episcopal Academy campus was sold to St.Josephs University.

I'll suggest Media and Swarthmore which are about 10 miles west of Penn as nice suburban communities/great schools with an easy commute to Penn.

Good luck.

Well I've developed a short list thanks to all the suggestions. I won't be using the public transportation mainly because I want to be able to take my kid to school everyday. I don't know why I thought there were one or two good public school pockets in philly. I am really shocked that the public schools rank poorly.
Thanks all!

The Penn Alexander School is affilated with Penn and is excellent. Look for housing in the school's catchment area.

Just google Penn Alexander school for more information.

It looks like Bala Cynwyd mainly due to the fact that it is in the number one rated school district in Pa. Philly, sadly is 502nd out of 571 districts.
Schools in Philadelphia City School District, Philadelphia, PA.
I can also get a reasonable rental from what I've seen on craiglist.
Additionally, I checked the Megan's Law website and there are only four registered offenders in the area which gives me peace of mind.
Bala Cynwyd looks good. I am just wondering about the traffic to Penn. Does anyone know what the peak hours are so I can schedule my classes accordingly?
Gosh, this forum is almost like having a friend in the city.
Thanks so much.

Thanks for the update rainrock.

We moved from Newtown Square (NS) to Florida 4 years ago. It is a shame we could not get the $600K it was really worth. We held it for over a year paying taxes on our homes in Florida and a vacant home in NS. ....

I did not know there was a lot of RE changes since we moved but according to the Pres. most changes are good.

Media and Swarthmore are far away and involve a lot of traffic. My brother attended the Media school district and my sister attended Swarthmore College then Univ of Penn. Traffic jams along Balti Pike break up smoothly but at times the travel is slow during the warm weather. When snow falls on the area forget about it...

Peak hours from Bala/City Line area to Penn are of course in the AM 730-10 and 3-630 PM. Travel would be going on the Schuylkill Expwy and expect delays. OR Turn right from City Ave at the reservoir. Make a left on the road that leads to the Zoo (34th st) and go past the Zoo on 34th Street... Keep doors locked.

I also wonder if Penngirl knows there is a difference between the published an unpublished crime rate on Penn's campus??

I would keep my doors locked in Florida. You have better chance of getting hijacked or home invaded in Florida than you do in Philadelphia. Enjoy your swamp.
