I been seeing some craigslist apartment ads mention a June 1st move in date which was surprising because it's only january. I thought for a June 1st move in date I started looking in Mid March?

Am I wrong? Any help would be appreciated, thanks

They are probably renting to college students who are moving out by the end of May.

You are correct that in most cases, landlords would start advertising three months in advance. The fact that someone is advertising this early for a June 1st move-in date likely means that they are renting to college students. The good news for you is that if you could lock one in now, you'd have that much more time to prepare for your move.

When you say lock one in now, what does that mean? Thanks

Sorry, I edited my post while you responded to it.

I mean that if you're ready to put down a deposit "now", you can start preparing for your move early instead of stressing out in the spring.

FWIW, I've always moved out on the 1st of the month whenever my lease expired...although I knew a guy once who had his stuff ready to move in at midnight on the 1st to the shock and chagrin of the previous renter who was not quite ready to depart.

How much of a deposit would a place be looking for?

It depends. Normally it would be two or three months' rent (with one month being a refundable security deposit) but with that long timeline, it may be different. Probably just best to ask the landlord.
