Thought this was interesting since I have been considering DE, as do many Pennsylvanians:

Delaware is a surprise, many Marylanders move there for retirement and many people who work here live there.

One thing that wasn't mentioned for MD is that retired pay/pensions are taxed here.

It was a surprise to me as well, particularly cost of living. I think it has a 1% income tax, but that shouldn't matter unless one is very rich. One of the criterion is health care which could be the culprit.

Depends on where. In many place RE taxes are obscene, and PA doesn't give seniors a break on them as some states do (though I'm not sure which).

it also doesn't tax you on retirement income. for those who retire in urban areas you ride buses for free as well. PA's RE taxes vary substantially. mind you it's not the best but it's a decent state depending on where you choose and what you want

PA does have a property tax rebate program for seniors paid for out of the Lottery. The maximum benefit, except in certain instances, is $650. It slides down as income goes up.

The list is simplistic ... it is of limited value. Why shouldn't a person retire to Delaware? According to this list The First State has a slightly higher than averge cost of living and also a higher than average crime rate. These are state-wide averages that are skewed by the crime rates in certain bad parts of Wilmington and New Castle; and the high costs of desirable beach towns like Rehoboth, Dewey and Bethany. Most of Delaware is very safe and quite affordable for seniors who are not affluent.

My only problem with retiring to one of those attractive, affordable, clean, safe and comfortable 55+ gated communities in Southern Delaware is that as a single urban gay man I would find the lifestyle boring because of the lack of nightlife, culture, and activities I find enjoyable. Playing bridge with retired couples chatting about their grandchildren in the clubhouse would be a living hell for me.

Default Right now PA is at the top of my list

Been researching where to retire for quite some time now, and right now Philadelphia is at the top of my list. See Kiplinger's tax guide here:
