Are all the streets in the 50's bad? 50th to 59th street? Near University City and University of Philadelphia Sciences?

Just curious, cause it seems like a complex area. Penn State, University of Philadelphia Sciences are close to the area and then looking further down the area looks a bit run down according to google maps?

Can you explain this area?

Yeah, I really need to get myself one of those shirts... So many of my relatives tell me, "Oh, I have a Nittany Lions sweatshirt!"

Either way, I wouldn't really call Penn CLOSE to 50th street. It is far enough away to be a lot different. Personally, I wouldn't live over there, but isn't all bad. The area around 46th and Baltimore, 45th and Walnut, etc. are not "ideal" but they aren't terrible. So, I'd keep away from going too high in the 50s personally.

Yeah, the 50s in general tend to be not that great. I would stick with the 40s if at all possible and south of Walnut.

BTW, the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) are two different universities lol.

How dare you confuse an Ivy League with that mediocre school!

It's the University of Pennsylvania NOT Pennsylvania State University.

I thought people really knew the difference by now. Guess I'm wrong. Sigh.

I'd say that 46th and Baltimore is a lot better than it was 5-10 years ago. Definitely a LOT better than it was in the 90s.

Yes, there are a lot of lovely establishments along that route and I think there has been a great investment into the community by the people who live around Clark Park and what not. There seems to be a deal of community pride. I think it will definitely be a great area in the future.

Quick and dirty rule: draw a line between 50th and Baltimore and 40th and Market. Stay to the right of that line and you're generally good.

As a native Philadelphian, VERY few things tickle me more than people mixing up and/or not caring about the difference between Penn & Penn State, to the dismay & indignation of Penn students!

(and I went to Penn)

As a fellow Penn alum, agreed.
