I am moving to Chester PA from SC to work. I am 29, single, and have no idea what part to live in or if a commute from somewhere would be better that would have more of a lifestyle to meet people. I know Philly is close but cost of living is also a concern. Any advice would be helpful.

As someone who has lived in Chester for the past 4 years and recently moved to Philly, don't. You are making a big mistake. Chester is a run down, violent, drug-riddled ghetto with absolutely no hope for improvement. The crime rate is through the roof, and the entire city is run down and depressed. The only "okay" parts of Chester are the streets immediately surrounding Widener University. Nobody voluntarily lives in the rest of Chester because it's just that bad. Look for other places even if you have to pay more to live there. It'll be worth it.

Estimated Population in 2013: 34,031
2012 Murders: 22 (64.3 per 100k)
2012 Rapes: 17 (49 per 100k)
2012 Robberies: 217 (633.8 per 100k)
2012 Assaults: 464 (1,355 per 100k)

http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime...nsylvania.html

As you can see from the map, almost the entire city is classified as "Very High Crime Rate". If you aren't attending Widener University, do not move here.

No one intentionally moves to Chester. Hopefully you meant Chester County or West Chester. If you really are going to work in Chester county, you will want to live somewhere (anywhere) else. Media is a neat large town, it's the county seat of Delaware county and easy commuting distance to Chester.

Work? In Chester? Most industry left there decades ago. As someone who grew up in Chester and left there years ago, I would highly recommend against it. Live in nearby Woodlyn, Brookhaven, Marcus Hook, or Ridley.

Despite the building of a Harrah's casino and Soccer stadium, most of the city is in shambles. One of the blocks I used to live on, which once had row homes, is now a vacant field. The downtown business district, Ave. of the States, looks like it has been bombed. I was hoping some investment would help it come back and have a renaissance, in which case I would return, but that's not going to happen.

You mean City of Chester. All of Chester County is fine... even Coatesville.

Oops! My typo. Having lived in Chester county, I do know the difference! Can't say I agree about Coatesville though.
