So how would you like people to see the city? What do you want the city's identity to be?

But. . .to be honest, Rocky did for the city what the bicentennial was supposed to do - bring in tourists. Unfortunately, it also brought in tourists who thought that Rocky was representative of the residents.

Philly has a lot more to offer than then just some fictional boxer from a movie. Like BajanYankee said, there are plenty of real boxers who represented Philly well.

I personally don't know anyone who thinks Rocky is representative of all Philadelphians. Most people seem to understand it's a movie about a fictional character. Rocky is, for better or worse, just one part of the city's identity. I don't think that's a bad thing per se.

When people come to visit Philadelphia for the first time, they always ask me to take them to the Art Museum so they can run "the Rocky Steps."

Rocky Steps - Fairmount - Philadelphia, PA | Yelp

4.5 stars on Yelp. Not bad.

That's all fine & good. But for those of us who remember the mills closing we also remember the announcements that the city was going to try to use the bicentennial to bring in tourists to see the REAL city assets. We remember when Rizzo blew that. We remember the first tourists who came to see where Rocky came from. The 6th Sense went a looong way to fixing that situation. I know where he was coming from.

If Frank Gehry gets his wish, regarding cutting a section out of the steps, that might end those runs.

I really liked the fight against Tommy Gunn with the El rumbling overhead. Very grimey. I liked that it wasn't as cartoonish as the third and fourth installments.

"Hey Rock, you need some help?"

"Nah fellas, this ain't no pie eatin' contest."

Those complaining about what another rocky movie will do about Philly's imagine need to understand that anytime a movie is set in Philadelphia (especially if it films here) is a good thing. Not every movie about the city needs to be complimentary of the city or indicative of the city's population.

That said. Please don't defend Rocky V. It must have come out when you were at a very impressionable age. Fond memories of childhood is the only possible explanation for enjoying this movie. It is every bit as terrible as people make it out to be.
