Hello all -

I am thinking moving to Philly from Wilmington in October because I am tired of commuting and between work and grad school, I want those three hours of my life back (every day). Other than the craziness of 3 months rent necessary to move in, are there any other surprises to consider when moving to Philly? For example, a few years ago I moved from Baltimore to Wilmington, both my car insurance and utilities went up. I was stunned!

At any rate, any thoughts/experiences will help.

Cheers,
Beth

You will have to pay Philly wage tax if you live in the city

If you have a car parking can be expensive and a pain depending on where you live in the city.

Here's a detailed comparison of the two cities

Mostly things will be more expensive, rent most of all. It looks like you'll be paying a lot less for utilities though.

I think she might mean Wilmington, DE, not North Carolina.

You really thought someone would be commuting 3 hours every day from North Carolina?

It's literally a half hour drive from Philly. You pass through it anytime you drive to Baltimore or points south. Population wise it's only about 8% smaller than Camden. More than half of the US's Fortune 500 companies are chartered in Wilmington, making it one of the corporate capitals of the country. Did you just move to Philly? How is it possible you aren't aware of the mid-sized city just to the south?

EDIT: I can't completely tell from your posts, but I'm getting the idea that you're a British ex-pat currently living in Chicago? Okay, well in that case I can understand it. This is like if I went into the Chicago forum and admitted that I didn't realize there was a Gary in Indiana . Carry on, old chap.
