Hello everyone,

I will be taking a job following my college graduation (Landsdale area) from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. I am looking at the the Manaynuk/Rox. area for places to possibly live. It seems like an area with a lot of young people. Can anyone fill me in on the following about the neighborhood:

-Crime
-Nightlife
-Type/Quantity of young people
-Average Rents
-Comparison to a Pittsburgh neighborhood

Northwest Philly is all hills and valleys so it's very evocative of Pittsburgh in that sense. There are also a lot of similarities in terms of architecture. As far as the vibe goes, there's nothing like it in Pittsburgh. Philly is a lot bigger and a bit more sophisticated than PGH.

If you took the density of the South Side flats, then doubled it, threw in a dash of the South Side bar scene then took a touch of Lawrenceville, Bloomfield and Squirrel Hill, shook it all up and threw it on the side of a big hill you'd have Manayunk/Roxborough.

Manayunk has the reputation of being a place for post-college kids. The rents are, IMO, expensive but you can check craigslist for yourself. Parking is close to impossible. Main St. in Manayunk has a lot of good restaurants, good bars, and a ton of shops. There's far more variety and it's generally more upscale than what you'd find on Carson St.

Roxborough is up the hill from the Manayunk. There are only a handful of streets that connect the two neighborhoods. The rest of the streets end in staircases - which should be familiar to anyone from Pittsburgh. Rox is definitely more laid back and family friendly than Manayunk. The houses are usually bigger and it's generally twins and singles as opposed to the rowhouses of Manayunk. Rents are cheaper, parking is usually easier and the transit is better.
