Want To move to Philly From Miami
Ok here we go Im new at this ..
My boyfriend and I are planning to move to Philly within the year. We are from Miami and we are dying to leave Florida!! We are both in our late 20's and we work in healthcare. We are looking to rent first either an apartment to townhouse. We want to move by the city but not in it we were looking at South Philly but we are not sure. We enjoy the city life/ nightlife so we want to be close by it.
If i can get some info that would be GREAT!!!
Thank YOu

Well South Philadelphia is definitely "in the city" not "by it." I'm actually not sure what "by the city" means, though it suggests you want to live in a close in suburb, though that wouldn't be my choice for a late 20s couple who "enjoys the city life/nightlife."
Maybe if you answer the FAQ pinned above and give us more detail about what you are looking for we can help.

Manayunk is great for young singles...part of the city - barely. Northern Liberties is more rough in the city but also great for young people - very hip, very up and coming.
Conshohocken is outside the city by a bit but also great for young folks - and more affordable...
West Chester is a college town with a city feel - lots of restaurants and bars, but also lots and lots of families and college students...no public transportation to the city - you would have to drive a town over to catch the train...

south philly is pretty vast. you'd need to do some research as to what part.
some parts are nice residntial, some not so nice, some claustrophobic, some dangerous, etc...
i've heard good things about passyunk square. its got the hip trendy folks living there. also bella vista, hawthorne, queen village, pennsport, etc...but there are so many more other neighborhoods..
also, as mltimes stated, all of these neighborhoods are very much "in the city"' and close to all the center city amenities that i think you're looking for (nightclubs, lounges, bars, restaurants). you will hear police sirens from your living room though . hope that helps.

philly
don't go to manayunk, it is not even close to the "city" and the night life. It depends on how much you are willing to spend. If you are looking for any range of prices then maybe old city, or society hill would be great. But if you are looking for reasonable prices than south philadelphia would do. Maybe even Fairmount would be good. I know many late 20's who live there, and it is like a 5 minute drive to the city city that you referring to. Good luck, and if you go to south philly, then make sure your are not dolphins fans, but eagles! Really, it will make the transition a little easier

Oh I think they'll be fine in their Dolphins gear unless it's the rare occasion that they're playing the Eagles. It's throwing on something with the Giants, 'Skins or especially the Cowboys on it that would get them in "trouble".
Then again, I guess we don't have much to worry about with the Cowboys, huh? <high five>
What up, borracho? heh heh

perhaps more affordable, but definitely not for a couple in their 20's who enjoy the city/nightlife.

Don't listen to these naysayers...check out or read up on Conshohocken and Manayunk before you decide...both of these places are much safer than places adjacent to Center City and not that far of a hike to downtown if that's where you want to spend your Saturday nights...
