nothingness
no consciousness, no cognitive thought...you simply cease to exist
everything you are is electric impulses in the brain, fed by blood/oxygen...

what happens when you receive anesthesia before surgery,,,nothingness...no awareness or thought...same as in death

Anyone who wakes up from surgery or a coma with memories of a bright light, walking towards it blah blah blah are SO SURE its not a dream or fantasy created by our brains (which it is)
same with seeing a ghost or goblin, its yer brain playing tricks on you lol

I love how very religious people are SO sure they know...I once listened to a preist explain, for an hour, how their MUST be a god and that this god created us,,,he sounded like a little kid in fantasy land...meaning either he is crazy OR none of us really know anything

I believe we go back to wherever we were before we got here

For example, if I was conceived 3/2/66, I go back to wherever I was on 3/1/66

To me it's kind of comforting, as I seemed to be ok about things on 3/1/66, so it shouldn't be that bad going back there

There is no more reason to think you can have consciousness without a brain (or alternative physical substrate) than there is to think you can have wetness without water (or a similar liquid).

Same thing that happened before you were conceived - nothing.

Except that Mr Monroe was able to do it from a wakened state.

In addition, he collaborated with others to instrument his "travels" and make recordings of his brainwaves and other physiological data.
Over time, they generated a "road map" of the necessary brain frequencies - but they were subsonic.
Monroe developed and patented HEMI SYNC to heterodyne subsonic frequencies into the brain, duplicating his own sequence for others to use in their "travels."

Check out videos about the Monroe Institute and related speakers.

I had to face this question head on and my reasoning and research found truth in reincarnation for those spirits who wish to return. But I am not atheist nor agnostic. I am a spirit having a human experience.

I will cease to exist, there will be no afterlife, no one will visit my grave, if there's a grave, and I'll soon be forgotten.
