This is a fact, not some ill-informed rant. I refer you to the crime stats posted by the city of Phoenix. As others have said, even the worst areas of Phoenix don't compare to the true ghettos of older big cities like New York and Chicago. But by Arizona standards, Maryvale is one scary place, and Sunnyslope is just minor league ugly.
Actually, I am VERY familiar with the area as I work in Sunnyslop for over 4 years near Central and Dunlap.

When it comes to Arizona cities, Sunnyslope is easily the worst.

Your so-called fact is nothing more than opinion.

Interesting perspective. I actually lived in the area, so was there 24/7 for a number of years. The crime stats posted on the City of Phoenix police department website shows very clearly that the Maryvale neighborhood has the highest violent crime rate in the city. Sunnyslope is not comparable. As I've stated before, the Sunnyslope neighborhood is shabby and ugly in most areas, but is not as dangerous as other areas of the city.

And, that, folks, is indeed a fact, as reported by the city police department. So, to be clear, it is spelled "Sunnyslope," it is a neighborhood and not a city, and my "so-called fact" is called an actual fact and statistic by the City of Phoenix.

Definitely not the worst. Central/Dunlap? I also fear wine bars and interior design studios.

Ha, funny you should say that about Harlem as Harlem has and is becoming 'gentrified' . People are moving in and taking the beautiful old buildings and restoring them. A former President now has his office there. So if Sunnyslope is anything like Harlem, it's worth the interest in moving there. There are younger professionals who actually value older places/homes instead of constantly building new. Building new, when there are older homes that one could buy is actually a waste in my opinion. (Remember, JUST MY OPINION....but then again that's a whole 'nother subject!)

Crime stats don't mean anything, and are typically inaccurate. You can't judge a town based on some interrnet stats. For example, Phoenix has the highest kidnapping rate in the country due to the illegal drop houses.

I never claimed that Central and Dunlap was the worse part of the area, that's where I worked, nothing like picking and choosing what you reply too, you should be a politician!

Stop comparing Sunnyslope to the one area in Phoenix that may be worse, why not compare it to the better areas?

I was responding to your statements regarding Sunnyslope being the worst area of Phoenix. I provided facts that disprove your statements. There are many better areas of Phoenix, but that's not what you were discussing.

Default Orion at Hermosa Pointe Apartments, Near Sunnyslope OPINION!!!

anybody who's been around there, could you share an opinion about Orion at Hermosa Pointe apartments...I am 49yo, moving from Bloomfield Hills (think ritzy but now I'm downsizing) and I've rented an apartment there sight unseen because of the expense of going there...made the mistake of looking at the "ratings" on the complex and started searching this site to find out more..now I'm worried and I don't want to sign a lease in an area that is not cool. Let me tell you what I think is cool....I chose Orion because of North Mountain, I like to hike in the am..so I'd like that to be safe. I will be attending school in downtown Phoenix so I wanted to be close (Bethany HOme road)...and I am okay with artsy (think Royal Oak, Michigan--artists, festivals, cool bar scene with some dives and upscales coexisting); I know Tempe is not my speed because of my age...no need to feel older by hanging with ASU crowd...so opinions, please. I would also take opinions about where I should live...don't necessarily want upscale but that is what I'm used to....

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to chime in with my observations. I took my motorcycle out so Sunnyslope today, I rode all over the neighborhood. I really liked it there, it just had a nice happy energy. Who would expect this urban neighborhood, right in the suburbs of north Phoenix. There are people walking around, liquor stores, car repair shops, just the right amount sketchyness to keep things real. Maybe Sunnyslope is similar to Van Nuys in Los Angeles, I love that place too. And I like all those 1960's era apartments in Sunnyslope. I ate outside at the Filaberto's on third and Dunlap, the taste of Mexican food and the sound of traffic go so well together. I'll be back.
