I'm moving to the Phoenix metro in July and would like suggestions on the best areas to rent. I have my own business so distance from work is a non-issue. I have 2 small children and my concern is more of an area that is not crime ridden. I want a safe and desirable area to raise my children that is is somewhat close proximity to shopping and good schools. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

There are so many that would likely fit your needs. Are there other specific amenities you'd like to have nearby? You really need to come visit, if you have not already, to get a feel for this very large, spread out metro area, with lots of places that would meet the criteria you've given thus far. If you have been here before, what areas have you visited that appealed to you? With a little more direction, the good folks here can give you more help.

You'll find tons of great, detailed, current information by using the advanced search thread near the top of the page.

I'm a huge fan of Gilbert, in the east valley. Tempe also gets excellent reviews for liveability. Scottsdale's very nice, but I think you get "more bang for your buck" outside of Scottsdale. Another good area to check out is north Phoenix, near Scottsdale, adjacent to the 101, and moving west from Scottsdale.
