I am looking to relocate to the N. Phoenix area and had a friend just tell me that her Brother lived in Mesa about three years ago and said the schools where horrible, Mexican gangs in the schools and everywhere, everything is in Spanish and English, so many illegal immigrants everywhere, and a lot of gang crime including rapping, and drugs. He has lived in so many areas and never saw so many gangs and rude people. He said his kids where not welcome because they where the minority in the area.

A former co-worker had problems with his grandsons elementary school in Mesa. The kid was harassed to no end because he was white. Being the minority is never going to be easy. In Mesa, or anywhere, it's all about where you live. I can't imagine all of the schools in Mesa being like this.

In terms of general safety there are Mexican gangs and other gangs. Don't sell/buy, don't smuggle people and your chances of running foul become almost impossible.

It sounds like most of the California public school system . Mesa school distict has lost many of these students because of the economy and many companies use e-verify now.

yes, there are gangs and wannabe gangsters in Phoenix...and in Kokomo, Peoria, and Wichita....

as Bondurant says, don't participate in their business and you'll be fine....

the federal gov refuses to deal with it so the state has been forced to do so.

there are gangs, but that certainly is not a problem confined to MUSD. I have been tempted to start a thread on corruption in MUSD, as it seems to be common knowledge that it is basically UN-organized crime.

I don't see that as a problem in East Mesa. The majority of schools I've been to in Mesa don't seem to suffer from any of the problems above, except maybe drugs but that's a problem in most schools. Don't take advice from overly-critical nags such as this, you'll be fine.

Don't be fooled all the notorious gangs are in the Valley which will be predominately on the Southside and Maryvale. Just watch your mouth and keep to yourself and you will be fine.

No. Phoenix is a major metro area. There is some gang activity, as in all major cities. It's not at all comparable to Los Angeles, New York, etc. There are good and bad areas everywhere.

If you don't associate with unsavory people who do or sell drugs or are involved with human trafficking, it's unlikely you'll ever notice gang activity. On internet forums, you tend to see extreme opinions on both sides of every issue.
