Silly question, I know, but when I was in Phoenix I always wondered if there really is a Mel's Diner (from the show 'Alice'). I was staying in Cave Creek/N Scottsdale so my visits to Phoenix were brief...

Has anyone been there? It'd be cool to hear your stories!

Wow, I didn't know that show was based on a restaurant in Phoenix! I used to watch that show as a kid. I just remember it saying on the cash register, "No Checks".

there was no "Mel's Diner" in Phoenix that the TV show was based on....the TV show descended from the movie, "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore", which, though it took place in Phoenix, was filmed in the Tucson and Tubac areas....

And if I remember the movie correctly, the actual diner she ended up working at was Mel & Ruby's Café in Tucson. Phoenix was only a pit stop for her in the movie ... however, in the TV sitcom, Mel's Diner was located in the outskirts of Phoenix. I recall in the later episodes, their address was somewhere on Bush Highway, which is actually in the outskirts of Mesa.

There is currently a Mel's Diner on Grand Avenue north of downtown near I10. I have never eaten there, but I understand that this restaurant was constructed in a similar manner as portrayed on the TV series ... with the large sign of the dripping coffee cup and all.

It's funny how a lot of 70's and 80's television shows kinda missed a few things when it came to filming...I remember seeing an episode of Happy Days (based in Milwaukee, right?) with the family driving to downtown Milwaukee and noticing palm trees in the background. Sounds like Wisconsin, yep...

Thanks for the info on Mel's Diner. Let's see...so 'Alice' was set in Arizona, as was 'Romy & Michele's High School Reunion (Tucson)...I'm trying to think what other shows had an Arizona setting...useless stuff to think about on an otherwise boring day I know...LOL.

An awful lot of old western movies were filmed in Arizona, many at Old Tucson where you can tour the settings. Took the kids there a few years ago, and they loved it. Rio Bravo was filmed there, and the big river in the film runs through the old town. Of course the river is about 150 yards long at the maximum, and flows when they turn the big heavy duty pumps on.

Thanks for all the posts on Mel's Diner. I remember enjoying the TV show but didn't remember where the diner was "located". In Hot Springs AR is a "Mel's Diner", about the size of the old street car cafes but in a permanent building. I drove by it many times wanting to stop just because of it's name, and finally took time to do so. It is a better than average 'burger joint, and I will be going back.

Old thread, I know.

Does anyone know if Mel's Diner is still open? I have found some places online that say yes and some say no.
