I'm going to be needing an inexpensive motel for a trip since I'm poor and on a budget. I noticed there are quite a few neat looking ones along Van Buren St, kind of between 24th and 40th street. Then also on Van Buren St, just west of downtown there are a couple other ones, the Best West Inn and the Friendship Inn Motel. I've always liked these old style motels, they have a little character to them. Are there any of these "budget motels" around central Phoenix that you can recommend offhand? Of course I'll still have to drive around and see them first.

I stayed at this place back in May 2010 on a visit before I moved out here. Stayed there 3 nights. Booked via Expedia because it was the best value I could find. Less than $60 per night if I recall. No issues with this place at all. Room was clean, no bugs and the plumbing worked!

There is a place called Traveler's Lodge (not affiliated with Travellodge) at 27th Ave. and IS. Maybe less than 40 per night. It's not a nice area, but a lot nicer than VB, and decent security. 30 in August could mean 50+ in February. Moderator cut: snip

Thanks you all. I'll definitely check out the Budget Lodge downtown. It's right near a McDonalds too where I can just walk to get some coffee in the morning. That is if the motel's is weak which it usually is.

all of those motels are near the mcdonalds, which is on the south east corner of W Van Buren and N 7th Avenue. There's a sign on the door which reads, "please leave your backpacks, bedrolls, and shopping carts outside" but there'll be an off-duty Phoenix cop working there from 7-12 most days.

I would stay away from Best West Inn or the Friendship Inn. Most of the rooms are occupied by characters who rent by the week.... instead try the America's best Inn, or perhaps the Budget Lodge.

Neither is much to look at.

If price is your determining factor, then check out the EZ 8 Motel at 1820 S 7th St. It's further south of downtown - not walking distance to whichever boarded up building you feel like visiting during the day, but it is also close to a McDonalds, has a pool, an on-site bar w/ 2 dollar drafts, a restaurant, and last I knew, was charging about 29 bucks a night.

I once stopped at that McDonalds to use the restroom when driving to the airport from Sedona. I knew nothing about the area back then and I was rather scared once I realized where I was.

Some of those motels are probably occupied by the hour .

Van Buren is where all the hookers are and 24th/Van Buren across from the mental hospital is right in the heart of hooker row.

That situation is A LOT better than it used to be. I drive through there relatively regularly, and what I used to see not all that many years ago vs what I see now, it's a lot better. There aren't as many motels through there as there used to be, either.
