Go parallel with I-10 heading west.

Since you didn't mention where in S-dale you are starting from, I recommend using West Van Buren St (off of Galvin Parkway @zoo) until its clear to jump on the 10. McDowell Rd would be okay but its a total mess the closer you get to Grand Ave/19th Ave (especially if there is an event at the fair grounds).

North Scottsdale - Take the 101 and wrap around to the 10 in the West Valley.
Central Scottsdale - Take one of the major surface streets and hop on the southbound 51 to the 10.
South Scottsdale - Hop on the 202 Red Mountain and transition on to the 10.

There's no way you're going to avoid traffic heading to LA during evening rush hour from Scottsdale. The westbound I-10 doesn't start breaking up until at least 43rd Avenue. If there's an accident or if it's a Friday, you could be bumper to bumper all the way to 83rd or 91st Avenues.

If you really want to avoid bumper to bumper freeway traffic, you could take a major surface street all the way to 43rd or 51st Avenue and just head south onto the I-10, but I think the freeways would still be faster and less annoying than potentially sitting at endless red lights.

He's heading TO Scottsdale from LA and will be going the opposite direction of traffic on the 10 until he hits downtown. I would say take the 101 in the west valley and loop around but the couple times I did it was a mess at the I 17 area so I don't know what the time difference would be.

Google maps allows you to choose an "avoid highways" option - you could do a map from Citrus Rd or further east at Goodyear or Avondale, AZ to your locale in Scottsdale for the best "off interstate" option.

Scottsdale is a tall metro ..... If you are going to old town just take I-10 in .... You'll be good until near downtown

From there you could bail and head up to Indian school and run it in ..... May just be easier to stay on the 10, connect to the 202, get off I McDowell and work yourself into old town

Depends on what part of Scottsdale you're headed to. Old Town or south Scottsdale area, just take the 10 to the 202. North Scottsdale, take 101 all the way around.
