As an utterly bored Phoenix area musician who wandered back here after a six year stint in Portland, Oregon... I'm not finding much of anything.

Who's making actual studio music (i.e., not playing local venues for the townies), shaking things up?

Post links! YouTube vids and whatnot.

This is the only good thing I've found thus far:

The only band I liked that originated from AZ was Psychostick. Those guys crack me up.

Been a Tool fan from way back from the Opiate days. APC and Puscifer are great too. I'm going to have to veto though. I'm looking for new blood that's coming up here, and not longtime transplants like Soulfly, Kongos, etc.

I guess not recent since this song is 19 years old but, I always loved this song and this band was from Tempe, AZ. They also did the King of the Hill theme song.

I had no idea Maynard lives in AZ. I was always a big Tool fan.

As were Jimmy Eat World and Gin Blossoms. Roger Clyne is still kickin' it as we speak (lead singer of the Refreshments) with Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers.

As for music being recorded from AZ, I couldn't tell you OP. The best way to see music is to go to small clubs around the State. I've seen some cool local shows at Crescent Ballroom and the PhiX (before it closed )

Tucson has a two really cool venues for local acts, one is the Flycatcher and the other is Club Congress. As I said (before it was deleted) OP you seem like Tucson would be more your speed, it's more local feeling. They have a large Frat Rock/ReggaeSka scene down there. In Phoenix, Northern Peoria has an enormous Death Metal Scene and Tempe has a decent Ska scene.

You'd probably enjoy the documentary Blood into Wine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_into_Wine

It's about Maynard's vineyard in Arizona's wine country up near Jerome. Great soundtrack and lots of great scenery from around the state. Interesting to see another side of him as well.

Oh, I do. I go to Yucca Tap Room fairly often, sometimes Joe's Grotto, Chop & Wok (again, hip hop)... Crescent is more touring acts. Not much local support. Was going see what the forum had to offer. A lot of bands (like the last one I was in) didn't play out a lot as we focused on songwriting and recording.

No way I'd move to Tucson for the music scene... LOL. Austin, maybe. I'll check out your suggestions, though.
