Looks like I am transferring out to the Phoenix area from Houston for work. I will be transferring my lease as the company that owns my current apartment complex owns several out there, one being in chandler near Priest and Ray road. How is that area? How new or old is it? Grocery shopping nearby?

I've lived in AZ before (North Tempe) but I don't recall ever driving through this part of chandler. Any help is appreciated.

That part of Chandler borders 2 other areas one being Tempe which it literally borders just to the north of Ray Rd and the Ahwatukee neighborhood of Phoenix just west of the I-10. The area is really nice. That Casa Paloma shopping center on the corner of Priest&Ray is more higher end and there are some great eateries and shops in that area. The area isn't brand spanking new but it's "newish" and very well kept. The residential neighborhoods in that area are very nice and clean. As far as grocery stores go I mean everything you need is within a 5 mile radius. You won't have to drive far for anything. There's an AJ's right there at Priest&Ray, Frys is down on Rural&Ray, Safeway and Bashas is just across the freeway in Ahwatukee. Walmart, Target, Costco, and Sam's Club are all a quick car ride away as well. Chandler Mall is no more than 10-15 min away. The area is solidly middle/upper middle class you'll enjoy living in that area.

Good to hear. I have a bad taste in my mouth from when I lived in Tempe (university and 101), Def want to be in a nicer area this time.

There are also some complexes out in Surprise and Peoria but to be honest I'm are single 30 something so I want to be a little closer to Scottsdale,,not to mention be a little more centrally located as I have friends out in east Mesa.

Note that portion of Chandler (roughly the area of the city within the Kyrene School District) is bit more politically liberal than most of the city which is otherwise a semi-conservative city.

Another thing that might help.. I find that the street view function of google maps is very helpful to get a feel for a neighborhood from a far. When using Google Maps drag the little yellow guy in the right corner onto a street and you can "walk" around by clicking down the street. It is only good as how updated the pictures for the area are if there has been a lot of recent change. I just find it is a nice way to get a bit of a personal look.

It's a really nice upscale area I go to the AJ's all the time and also enjoy going to La Sur Table. There is all kinds of shopping right there. It's definitely one of the nicest areas in the valley and right on the Tempe, Chandler, Ahwatukee border.

This is the second time in the very recent past you have brought up your perception of the politics of a given area of the East Valley when the OP did not ask about that (or what school district the area is in). Some people don't care about what the voter registration statistics are in a given area. Don't assume that everyone does.

To the OP- -yes, that's a nice area. Nicer than the University/101 area. You will llke living there, I think. Good luck!

That would be a good place to live, but you don't mention where you'll be working?

We could give you feedback on your commute as well.

If you are referring to Lumiere Chandler Condos I cannot advise more strongly that you reconsider your choice. That complex has a historic issue with black mold, drug use and criminal activity (at least it did when I accidentally rented there 10 years or so ago). Please do your research, things may have changed with the change in management but my son ended up on breathing treatments due to mold in the walls. I'll spare you the details but if I were you I would consider some of the properties in Ahwatukee if you want to be in that area.

Just my $.02...like I said, it may have changed with the management change.

Really? It's such a nice area and the complex looks beautiful from the pictures. It also has good reviews. That being said you DID live there. I wonder if a lot could change over 10 years. Look hard under sinks and within bathrooms for any signs of water damage. I'd also recommend walking through on a Friday night and looking around. Maybe it would be better to be safe and keep looking after getting the perspective of a former resident however.
