I would avoid old town with your age and business interests.

No budget is mentioned, but all things being equal I wrote focus north of old town or west into Arcadia.

You would still have access to old town, but there is more for the established set around 44th Street and that area.

Tempe is also a good option if you are looking to network in the SE Valley, but still want good access to downtown and Scottsdale

I am a single 45 year old woman and would never consider hitting the scene in Scottsdale...we are too old. East Valley is a good option. Although there are families out here, big companies are relocating to the area. By the time you are in your 50's maybe a church or meet up as you suggested is best.

Not everyone has such a poor self-image at just 45 ("we're too old") or wants to hang out with church people. There are plenty of martini and wine bar types of places that cater to a more mature clientele that still wants to get out and have a good time. Even the breweries in Scottsdale tend to have a mixed age range. Get out and enjoy yourself before you are actually too old! Here's a start:

Goldwater Brewing
The Beverley
The Montauk
Kelly's
AZ 88
Olive and Ivy
Herb Box
Craft 64
Two Brothers
Scapegoat
5th and Wine (I don't recommend, but geezers galore)
Vine and Hops

Scottsdale would be high on my list, as well as the Arcadia & Camelback East areas of Phoenix. Some have mentioned the Biltmore area, but the part they're often referring to is the section of Camelback East around 24th Street/Camelback Road. The true Biltmore area is a little north of there, very high end, and could even be compared to Beverly Hills. Tempe tends to be more for the younger crowd, with the exception of south Tempe which is more suburban and has a mixed age range. I don't recommend Mesa. Fountain Hills is quite a distance from most things.

Scottsdale should be highest on your list, but don't discredit Fountain Hills (FH). FH is a great little town! Its quiet at night, safe as can be, and set in perhaps the Valley's best scenery. Its a short 10-15 minute ride into Scottsdale, yet w/o all the Scottsdale traffic. If I could, I would love to live in FH. Time will tell!

Hello,
This is my first post as well. I'm a single 45 female and moving to Scottsdale. I'm going to piggyback on your post and hope for some input as well. I've been to AZ several times and the one thing I know I want is to be in the Scottsdale area but I have no idea where would be best for me. I have always owned homes because of value and resale but I'm thinking a condo would make it easier to meet people and avoid the family scene. I work from home, so location doesn't matter but I don't want to live by twenty-somethings. Where to the 40+ single people live? And, I'm not looking for a retirement community Thanks for the advise!

Check out the above website for starters. There are plenty of condos in & around the Old Town area, which would be very suitable for young to middle age singles. Aside from Old Town, you might like Kierland which tends to attract a similar demographic. Places like these tend to have fewer families with children. Keep in mind that the more suburban you go, the more likely you are to have neighbors with kids all around, especially if you buy a house.

Amen. I'll be damned if I'm hanging out at churches when 45 in less than 10 years.
