Hey Guys, I wanted to grab your opinion. Olive/101 (Peoria) or 10/Jackrabbit Trail/Verrado. Which of these two commutes seem the worst for going to downtown ? I know both are bad, but what is more gruesome in your opinion ?

Thanks

They're both going to be terrible. An hour+ during the morning rush. Peoria may be a tad less awful. I can't see any reason to put yourself through that.

The I-10/Verrado option is worse. Here's why:

1: It's farther - this hurts you from the very beginning.

2: I-10 is the only option, which is a disaster heading east in the mornings from about 99th Avenue, and west in the afternoons to about the same point.

3: 101/Olive would be similarly bad if you took 101 to I-10, HOWEVER - you have the option of taking Grand Ave (US 60), which, also still heavily congested, can be a solid alternative to the freeway if you're heading into the heart of downtown.

Agree with codyw but I wouldn't sign up for either of these. They're both gruesome.

Also remember that in the morning, the commute from the West Side is driving into the sunrise. Going home...you will be heading into the sunset. Get a good pair of sunglasses

This point is underrated. Staring into the sun for an hour+ will be frustrating

I used to live in Avondale and my ex-girlfriend took the express bus into downtown for work from the Avondale Blvd park & ride. Even with the bus using the HOV lane and getting dropped off right in front of her building, negating the need to hike in from from the employee parking lot, she left the house at 6:30 AM to grab a bus in time to be at work by 8 AM. About once or twice a month there would be an accident and she could add another 30-60 minutes to the commute.

On the flip side, she got off work at 4:30 and would walk in the door about 6:15-6:45 PM. Roughly 2-3 hours a day of commute time for a job downtown.

10/Jackrabbit/Verrado. The backup heading toward downtown is starting to extend west of the 101. That means you will start slowing well before 101 traffic starts merging onto the 10. Additionally, the backup caused by people on eastbound I-10 who are trying to get on the northbound 101 is another factor too. There are so many people who insist of coming to a dead halt in the adjacent lanes, so that they can slide into the exit lane for the transition ramp. It is not only a dangerous situation, but again, causes slowing.

They're both going to be bad but the 10/Jackrabbit Trail/Verrado will be the worse as it farther out. That said move closer to downtown if you're going to do this commute. I'm in Goodyear and I turn down jobs that are east of the 101,I refuse to put myself through that traffic nightmare! I know there are many who do this daily commute but at this point in my life my time is valuable and there's no way I'm commuting 2-3 hours a day. Even when friends and family come I schedule their flights around rush hour traffic.

Exactly! I realize it's personal choice, but I can't understand why anybody would want to live so far out and expect to have an easy commute to downtown Phoenix. We keep hearing that our traffic is light compared to places like L.A. or Chicago, but the fact is that traffic is much worse now than it was a decade or so ago. Rush hour times are lasting longer, and there can be traffic jams in the middle of the day and late at night on certain streets & freeways. Live closer to work is the key (if possible).
