I doubt drivers will be policing this. I'm guessing since Uber\lyft know enforcing this won't be so easy they are likely only going to add on the charge if an end user selects Sky Harbor, or any of the major drop off points.

If an end user enters latitude longitude points that are close enough to a major drop off but don't actual geocode to the dropoff's geofence, the fee won't be added.

One way to deal with this would be for Uber\lyft to monitor the drop off window with a large geofence. That has its own set of problems that are easily beat.

Again, “easily beat” to save a few dollars isn’t going to be top of mind to a vast majority of travelers. Beating the system here is largely irrelevant.

Sure the fee is small for now and many will pay while that is the case. Increasing the fee could potentially be difficult though. I think a more fool proof way would have been to tack this charge on as a VAT fee at the stores and shops within the airport or even onto airlines themselves.

Take a ride share to the 44th st Washington Light rail station and get over it if it effects you that much

Get a better job if it's gonna hurt you that bad

Major issue in this country

Poeple want others to pay and kneel down for their poor life decisions

It's not about the money. People may accidentally dodge the fee without knowing it.

As a software developer, I just think will be hard to enforce as it takes just seconds to get around the fee and still end up at the same destination. A better idea would be a tax on stores within the airport. Consumers can't easily get around that.

As already established, it's simple to enforce and track and no one is going to put the thought into taking the "seconds to get around the fee". Do you travel a lot? Would you bother playing silly games within the app to skirt a nominal fee? No one will except for maybe a few fringe cheapskates.

I plan on it.. Out of principal. If my Lyft driver was correct, Lyft is NOT participating. As in, mid January, they are no longer going to PHX Sky Harbor. i.e. Lyft is boycotting. I'm sure Uber (which was $20 higher on my last two airport trips) will be happy about that.

So for me, the game is more than $4. It's $20+$4 (fee) as Lyft is ALWAYS cheaper for my airport runs. The driver who told me lives 5 minutes from my home. He gave me his cell and said schedule a day in advance for a pick-up or drop off. He will charge $25 from Surprise to the airport so even more of a savings. Still, I'd just rather choose Lyft which is normally $35ish and Uber is $55ish and soon $4 more.

the work around for Lyft is to put the drop off a minute from the airport (pick an address) and tip the driver to drop off at the airport. He said ALL OF the drivers he knows are participating. AND they just pull down their light. Easy.

So I plan on "sticking it to the man". lol

So yea, I'm a cheapskate and proud of it.

When I travel, the last thing I last thing I want to think about is playing silly games to either save a negligible fee or to somehow feel like I'm getting one over on the system. You do you though. To me, it's laughable.

Not a problem. I "play silly games" for $24 any way I can for a one second workaround. It's literally a one second workaround. As in, "do you mind if I tip you in cash to drop me off at the airport? I'm sure you hate this tax as it is your livelihood. I feel for you being in the middle of this money grab". And the answer will be YES, thanks for helping us.

Then I can use Lyft and save $24. Those daily techniques add up to hundreds then thousands etc. I Eventually that way of life adds up to "screw-you-money" which is defined as not having to go to work. It's a way of life for me and it's how I roll. Meanwhile, you can find that approach laughable. I'll use my approach every time while you go to work. Enjoy.
