We're planning to move to Phoenix area in 2 months, been there for holiday once and really like the city. However haven't really exploring the suburb area. I'm planning to work in the central city area and would like to know if there's some good recommendation on where to live with good neighborhood.

We're a family of 3 with 3 year old kid and will look somewhere not too far getting into the downtown area. (around 15-20 miles or 20-30min commute is fine) and we're probably looking into an area that is not too expensive.

Heard that the South Mountain, Laveen and Glendale is a nice area but haven't got a chance to visit there so any feedback will be appreciated.

Those are some of the last to come up when people are talking about the metro’s nice areas.

The commute from the west side into central Phoenix is hellish. Budget needs to be mentioned before we can give you any accurate recommendations. Phoenix is gigantic. Looking at a map doesn't give you an accurate idea of just how massive this place is. If you're going to be working centrally I would look central. I live in south Phoenix and while it's vastly improving I would hesitate to send kids to public school there.

sorry forgot to put the budget. We're looking for price lower than 300s, somewhere mid to high 200s therefore, I'm looking at south Phoenix as its not too far and the traffic not as bad from the west. However, if the area is not the best probably will look more into the west area.

I find south Phoenix to be just as safe as most of the west side, which I am not a fan of. However I don't have kids so I'm not sure about schools down there. I know that south mountain high school just went through a major renovation and I have heard good things about that school in general. Can anyone chime in?

If you want to keep your commute reasonable I would probably rule out the west side. I know it is tempting because housing cost is often lower, but at what cost? Spending more time in the car? That would get old really quick.

OP has a family and options are limited at that price point to find a decent size house in a safe neighborhood near downtown. West side will open up many more options.

Live near 7th ave or 7th st, the big streets that can take you downtown from midtown/uptown. This way you avoid Highway 51 and 10. You may also enjoy the area because it has that rarity : trees and lawns.

Sure that's ideal. Show me a decent house between the 7s in Uptown or Midtown for less than $280k. Doesn't exist.
