There's an Ikea in Tempe... I've been there a couple times. Their beds are actually pretty decent, and the prices are pretty low. I'm not sure about the kids furniture comparitively, but I'm assuming the same applies.

If you do get a bed from Ikea, make sure you get all the parts - they usually don't come in one box.

I would imagine there should be some decent stores in Tucson which would cut your drive in half but if you want to come to Phoenix here's a suggestion. Get off I-10 at Ray road and turn west to 48th street. There you will find a Roomstore, Ashley Furniture and an Oasis bedroom all in the same center. You could then go 2 miles north to Elliot and find a Mor furniture and then just another mile north of that is the Ikea. I am sure you can find something to your liking at a reasonable price in one of these stores. Personally I am partial to the roomstore as you can usually drive right to their warehouse and pick up whatever you buy, no waiting 6 weeks for delivery.

Roomstore has some good furniture and many times they have a "no interest for so many years" sale (which I qualified for with below average credit).

I've bought furniture from Ikea but some of it I've had to glue back together. The rest of the furniture doesn't feel like it's going to last very long so I wont be buying from them anymore.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you're better off buying quality used furniture out of classified ads and/or craigslist than buying from Ikea.

I think IKEA is great for accent pieces - end tables, lamps, odds and ends to make a place feel hip. As for big items that get a lot of wear and use, MaxPower123 is probably right. I have an awesome dresser from IKEA.
