Phoenix isn't like Chicago where there's sort of a "bad" area to stay out of. You know, in Chicago - and I realize I'm generalizing here - you can kind of say, look, if you're going to live on Lake Street, stay east of Damen, that kind of thing. That really isn't the case in Phoenix. Yes, there are some bad areas on the far south side of Phoenix, but for the most part Phoenix is very "scattered" and there can be bad areas near good areas. A lot of it depends on where you are working and want to live. That said, the best - the safest, nicest areas of Phoenix *tend* to be the Biltmore area (24th and Camelback and east of there into Arcadia), central Phoenix along Central Avenue north to about Dunlap; and north Phoenix around the Desert Ridge neighborhood near Tatum and the 101. But that's a trend only.

I'm originally from Chicago and Phoenix feels like a safer city overall. The areas to avoid would be West Phoenix and the Southwest side of Phoenix.

You forgot south Phoenix, Sunnyslope, and even some areas of East Phoenix.

Any of those areas compared to the Southside of Chicago are Mayberry; especially "East Phoenix!" Whatever area you maybe trying to describe...Sunnyslope is actually safe, but there is a low income area mixed with higher income types and a some of those druggies left that the cops are aggressively targeting; as for assaults, murders, theft, it's pretty low...South Phoenix is a different story as that is where the majority of the murders happen; still nothing like a Chicago's S. side.

When was the last time any of you came to South Phoenix? Granted there are pockets of very crime ridden areas in South Phoenix, but I can say the same for areas of Glendale and Peoria too. Even I wouldn't recommend those neighborhoods to someone who has lived in another large metropolitian area, even Chicago. It troubles me that South Phoenix is consistantly bashed. It's a purely generalized statement.

Please, OP, take the time to look at some of the newer neighborhoods south of Broadway, west of 7th Ave as far out to 99th avenue. These neighborhoods are being built up. For instance, Laveen is an up and coming area for young families. It (Laveen) also has a decent school district.

You mentioned in another post you were in retail management and he is in industrial/warehousing/construction if I took being a fork lift driver/general laborer correctly. Line work up before you come out here. The economy is poor at best right now. Who knows what will happen in the next year or so. Also as a point of information, you will find the cost of living less overall, but you also find wages less. My 2 cents worth.

From what I hear Laveen is not the best choice for Family even if its "up and coming" - you got a lot going on in Laveen...not in a good way

I had a house in Chandler that was all landscaped with Prickly Pear. My neighbor put up a basketball hoop for his kids and their ball kept getting trapped in the cactus. So I had it all ripped out. Most of the people I knew from Chicago at the time wouldn't do more than throw beer cans in their neighbor's yards. Maybe I just didn't have good luck with Chicago people.
