More like it makes no fiscal sense. Rail is costing about $100 million a mile to install, let alone operate. Just to get an extension line from the nearest current station (Washington/Priest) to Scottsdale & McDowell would cost $300 million (not including annual operational costs). And that's still 2 miles shy of Old Town (another $200 million to get there). Meanwhile Scottsdale extends another 30 miles North, but even then has only 200,000 or so tax payers who'd have to fund the whole thing (no more federal funds).

For perspective, the entire general operating fund of Scottsdale is $250 million for FY2010, so the cost for a 5 mile train track to Old Town would be double the entire budget for running the city. If planning a family budget, it's probably not smart to have a car down payment that's twice your annual income/budget! Concept-wise, I'd love to be able to catch a quick ride to hot spots - but looking at the numbers, it's not economically feasible.

Better to live closer to Downtown Scottsdale - you can ride the Bus or the Trolley and they run more often. No light-rail in Scottsdale though!!!!!!!
Your first paragraph speaks the truth!
