just a head up: although i like black backgrounds many photographers say black backgrounds are poor photography.
i cant imagine why as certain shots look great against black but non the less i thought i would mention it . i still do it myself anyway just because i like it.
one other point about flash..
the faster the speed you set the camera at actually works the reverse when flash is used and the flash burst gets longer and slower.. in other words the faster you crank up the camera speed the more light the flash has to put out to compensate. a flash doesnt get brighter or dimmer when more light is needed ,it stays on longer or shorter to produce that more or less light.
since our goal is to get the flash burst as short as possible cranking the speed down from around 1/200 to 1/125 or so actually speeds up the action stopping ability.
in fact if you go the opposite way and crank the camera speed way up past the synch speed the flash will stay on so long all the light cant even make it through the shutter and photos are to dark. thats exactley what happens when you exceed the camera maximum synch speed and you set the camera to fast.

as long as you have your flash on the camera i thought i would mention one more thing.
on your flash you have another setting called ttl-bl if your using nikon gear.
remember how i said that in ttl mode you have two exposure systems that are totaly independant from each other and dont even talk to each other.
well in ttl-bl or balanced mode they play very nice together.
thats a mode where if your shooting into the sun the flash will balance out very nicely on the subject making the light even with the bright background.
one caveat... avoid alot of grief and use the program setting or "p" for professional mode.
if you use aperture priority you run the risk of the shutter speed going higher than the max synch speed on your camera and cutting the light down to nothing. program mode is smart enough to limit your cameras speed to stay under the max synch speed automatically.
it works great. pros use program all the time when in balanced (TTL-BL) flash mode. they can stop concentrating on shutters speeds and concentrate more on composition.

Hey mathjak! I like the first shot, very beautiful shot! You captured the movement of the bee with the beautiful flower on its side, this came up to a very beautiful scene! I was really amazed by that. Thanks for sharing it!
