After reading online reviews I decided against the sony w230... Anyone have experience with the nikon L100? I know it doesn't have a rechargable battery and basically that is my biggest concern with it. It has a good zoom, 10 mp.. any insight to this camera is appreciated.

What type of pictures are you looking to take?

From the spec sheet on Nikon.com, it looks like you may wind up having a large spend on batteries if you stay with the alkalines.

I have kids so I need something quick, I also have been into taking landscape photos. There are times we are at indoor events, so I also need something that can handle dim lighting. I'd like something with a good zoom as well. It's really a shame I can't afford a DSLR. ugh

Totally understand.

The dim lighting may be an issue depending upon just how "dim" we're talking. The F/stop on the L100 is "only" 3.5 so it may be an issue if we're talking surprise birthday parties with the lights out or twilight settings.

While I don't own the L100, the "scene modes" I've seen from Nikon are more in-camera algorithms that try to mimic a pre-determined set of parameters for lights and darks based upon what the sensor "sees". Sometimes that can be good, but it can also be bad if there are outliers in the color data the sensor picks up.

Since you are looking at the $249 price point, you may also want to take a look at the Canon PowerShot SX 110 IS.

I may be a Nikon guy when it comes to sports, but for everyday point-and-shoot, I actually have a Canon SD900. Go figure.

I also was looking at the Nikon L100 and also FujiFilm FinePix S1500...both rated high...and seem mostly idiotproof....and the price range works for me....I will check on the Canon mentioned

Battery issue resolved...somewhat.

I'd recommend using Energizer e2 Lithiums (they are silver and blue) OR Sanyo Eneloop recgargeable batteries. I use both in my Nikon SB-800 (external flash unit) and in my D300's MB-D10 battery grip. Both batteries last forever in either product - at least for me.

You can pick up the Eneloop Starter kit at Costco for $29 (28 and change). The kit comes with 8 AAs, 2 AAAs, a charger, 4 D-cell adapters and 4 C-cell adapters. The Eneloop's are a VERY low discharge battery and last longer life, both recharge life and actual battery usage life.

SANYO eneloop | Ready to use Rechargeable Battery - The only battery you will ever need

I use to have Energizer Rechargeables which I now refuse to use them ever again after purchasing 20 and having them last a whole month before they stopped hold their charge.

I appreciate all your help. Still skeptical regarding the nikon. I'll take a look at the canon.
