I think the main reason there aren't many Krispy Kreme's left is because all their donuts were glazed and having every donut you buy from there be glazed will bore you eventually.

As someone who grew up near Buffalo and grew up with Tim's, I'll put it quite simply....
Its good food for the price you pay, they're also open late at night in most places, so its good place to hit up after the bars.
And to a certain extent, its one of those places you have to "know from birth" to truly appreciate. Its one of those things, it may not be the greatest, but it just reminds you of home.
Personally, I wish we had more here in NE Ohio. While, I understood their strategy with Toledo and Columbus, not having any in Cleveland/Akron/Canton/Youngstown really baffles me.

As for Krispy Kreme, they expanded too fast and overextended themselves. Their glazed donuts were OK, but their seasonal and specialty donuts were pretty good, but when you could pick them up in a lot of gas stations or grocery stores, (neither of which I've seen for a while either) for cheaper, why go to one of their stores.

Krispy Kreme donuts are overrated, and this is exactly why. Not all donuts were meant to be glazed.

I would get a headache after eating their donuts, because of all of the sugar.

I have several times. The cupcakes are better than at Prantl's for example, but not that special. Too much icing for me, too. I'm a chocolate fan but the banana butterscotch bliss was dee-lish (except too much icing to cake ratio).

Tim Horton's - I believe Dunkin Donuts bought them and that's part of the expansion. They're in NYC now too. Been to Canadian and US stores - no appreciable difference IMO. Also, IMO - they are a very basic, blah, chain. Serviceable but nothing special at all in it's field. Limited choice of donuts and they were quite average - no better/worse than dunkin donuts or giant eagle.

Krispy Kreme is like the crock pot meal of donuts - they all taste the same because of that horrid overglazing. However, one hot KrispyKreme once every two years is ok by me

Tim Horton's is not owned by Dunkin Donuts. A few Franchise owners under Dunkin Donuts became franchise owners under Tim Horton's. As Dunkin Donuts did not renew franchise agreements with them.

Wendy's spun the chain into an independent company in 2006. Stock price is around 37. Tim Hortons Inc. (USA)

Does anyone know if TH ever plans on opening free-standing/drive-thru restaurants as mentioned in the original article? I don't even know if they still operate at Consol Energy Center.

No, was replaced by a Dunkin' Donuts. That sums up the market around here for it, I imagine. Which is fine with me. Few things more overrated than Tim Hortons, just a weird Canadian obsession.
