Just curious. New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Virginia, Texas, California...but not Pennsylvania. Actually Texas is the highest percentage of home value, with property tax bills equivalent to California's on homes worth one quarter as much. Are some of ya'll whining about property taxes here just a bit too much? Forbes list

I'm surprised Texas has high property taxes considering the education system sucks.

Hey! There's something wrong with that list. Forbes lists the property tax as $4,347 for a $743,200 house in Marion County, California. Property taxes around here are WAY higher than that.

My house is worth 135K and we pay 2100 a year. But there was a time when my house was worth 475K.... ah, California...

I think the difference is that (and I could be wrong here) you guys have both traditional property taxes and school taxes tied to the property.

My mom had gone on once about my sister paying nearly 6K a year in property taxes and when I looked it up on Zillow it was half that. I told my mom I didn't understand and that's what she said it was.

I know in my mind if I had to pay both property taxes and school taxes tied to the property, I'd think they were both property taxes.

I think the problem with the Forbes list is that it's only taking into consideration the mils without considering that some areas don't tax on the full value of the property. A California home might be worth 1 million dollars but the taxes might be based on 150k. Whatever. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to notice that 4k on a 700k home is very low taxes compared to here in PA. People can pay 10k in taxes on a 200k house here.

Really? Acc'ding to USNews, TX has 3 high schools ranked on the national top 20: America's Best High Schools: Gold Medal List - US News and World Report

Having several friends who relocated to TX, all praised the schools and lamented the taxes. It doesn't seem fair to characterize the education system there as "suck(y)".

Our old lakefront house in western NY was valued at somewhere around $220k and taxes were nearing $5k. My house here is valued at $48k and taxes are $1300 with homestead exemption.

Almost cheaper to live in NY.
