I will soon move to Pittsburgh from New Jersey and I'm trying to make an idea about the city and the neighborhoods. There is a lot of useful information on this forum, but maybe you could give me some "custom-made" advice for my particular situation:
My wife will work on Corporate Drive (zip 15237) and I'll go to school to the University of Pittsburgh. We would prefer to rent something closer to her job rather to my school, idealy mid-way and with easy access to both locations. Public transportation to Pitt would be nice, also.
Of course, I'd want to avoid the dubious areas.
I'll come to Pittsburgh in the first week of January, and school will start on 15th, so I have to move quick.

That's in the North Hills. I think your best bet would probably be just to live in the North Hills. There is an overabundance of really nice neighborhoods and places to live. Depending on where you would decide to live in the North Hills, Pitt could potentially be a 15 to 20 minute drive away, and I would imagine there are plenty of buses heading that way from North Hills.
The North Hills is a big place. Generally speaking, McCandless is part of the North Hills, or more specifically, Wexford. It's a really nice place to live if you can afford it, but it's also north North Hills. Obviously, if you would live more in south North Hills, you would be closer to Pitt.
Brace yourself, this is what is generally considered the North Hills: Ross Township, Borough of West View, Shaler Township, Franklin Park, Marshall Township, Bradford Woods, McCandless, Hampton Township, Pine Township, Richland Township, Cranberry Township, and Seven Fields. All of these places are located in Allegheny County with the exception of Cranberry Township and Seven Fields.
The very nicest areas are usually in north North Hills including Wexford and Cranberry/Adam's Township. Wexford as an area includes Borough of Franklin Park, the Town of McCandless, Pine Township, and Marshall Township. Some of this property is very expensive.
What is your price range?
If you want to be close to work and Pitt I would probably look around the neighborhoods in the North Hills off of McKnight Rd, close to Ross Park Mall and the vast amount of commercialism. That is, if you can handle that.
My boyfriend's family is from a neighborhood not even 5 minutes from Ross Park Mall, sort of behind it, and it's a lovely neighborhood, you would never know you were close to the city until you left to get onto McKnight.
The homes are pricey but not nearly as bad as Wexford/Cranberry/Adam's Township.
West View would be close to her work, too, it's a bit more traditional looking town, a bit older, and not nearly as costly.

Ross Township would be on top of my list for recommendations. It is right next to Corporate Drive. Ross reminds me of the area that I lived in Jersey. Public transportation (bus) is available on route 19 (also known as McKnight Road) into the city. You could drive into the city in about 10-15 minutes depending on traffic.
If you are looking for something with nice amenities, try the Woodhawk Club or the Club at North Hills. One bedroom apartments run about $800 a month. When you sign up, you can get considerable deals including two months free with a year contract and $500 off the initial lease. If you live at either of these locations, you could probably drop your wife off at work on the way to school. Generally speaking, rent in Pittsburgh will be significantly more economical than Jersey.
You can find more economical options on craigslist, type in Ross in the apartments/housing search query.
If you choose to live in the city limits, be aware that you will be levied a higher school district tax than you would outside the city limits. For example, if you live in Observatory Hill, Bellevue, or Brighton Heights, you will be assessed a 3% tax on wages. In those areas outside the city limits, you will be assessed a 1% tax on wages.
Ross Township would be on top of my list for recommendations.
