I agree there is some ideal range in there somewhere. Hopefully we are moving into it and won't go past it (I am cautiously optimistic).

100% agree. As I see it, every one of those people is a durable network connection to another place, and network connections are what cities are all about.

On the plus side, if we get this just right, the remainders of that attitude will filter out people we wouldn't necessarily want anyway.

I've always lived here and want to stay forever if I can, but I've been to other metros and realized the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I really think the self-hating mentality in Pittsburgh has died down a lot over the past ten years. I can see it among people out and about and amongst family members. I suppose I'm one of those people who could live in the same house for 40 years (as long as the positives of the area hold constant of course).

So we need our natives to move elsewhere it give a much better perspective on the Burgh and it puts Pittsburgh out there in a good way.

No longer should we look at Natives leaving as a bad thing....
I agree. I spent my 20s and 30s living in a variety of cities before eventually deciding to return to Virginia. The experience was very enriching and one I highly recommend. I think most people would benefit from living in both a big city (at some point in their life) and a medium sized or small city (at some point in their life). People who grow up in DC should try a place like Pittsburgh, and vice versa. It enriches them, and benefits both cities.

Good point. However Pittsburgh isn't immune from the fly over mentality either. I think some people in Pittsburgh would probably say the fly over country starts once you pass the PA-Ohio line besides Chicago or even when crossing the river you aren't the closest to.

and one needs to look no further than Hollywood for proof of outward migration do a location good.....Yes it part due to the PA film credit but a lot location will give that.....

Its truly Pittsburgh significant outward migration to LA over past years that Pittsburgh Film Office is where it is today, nothing like that word of mouth.....

Steeler Nation could be seen as another positive to Pittsburgh Outward Migration. People look at Pittsburgh very favorably simply because of the Steelers and Pens (to an extent)

And that's fine if your content with that....But a lot people need to see and experience other places in order to put their own hometown into perspective.

Someone commented on how they couldn't believe how The Burgh is importing people from LA and Las Vegas...Well if one ever stopped to think back when Pittsburgh had its huge exodus these are top cities is where its population flocked to? Now is it too far fetched to think that with the tables now turned the natives want to come home?

That's true for most people it takes to leave an area to understand or appreciate it better. Also, the person who made that comment was me lol. I would be interested in seeing how many people who left are "boomeranging" back here because of the changes in the area

Was this before or after all the various restaurant reviews you used to write on the Nova forum? Gee if things were so tough that you had to skip meals, maybe you shouldn't have eaten out so often.

I'll bet quite a few. And when they come back, they'll bring ideas that will enrich the city. You might even score new businesses like Wegman's if people move back to Pittsburgh and then insist on having stores like that.
