It seems some liken it to "kraut" or "limey" or worse, though it has a potential to be embraced like "yankee" or "canuck" have been to a degree.
well said.

i think the issue with scr using "yinzer" as an insult in a moment of anger is that instead of just insulting the dude by calling him an a-hole or even a jagoff, he insulted the dude in a way that disparages the city and people who grew up here. it's like insulting something by calling it "gay" - if you don't think that term is a bad thing, why would you use it as an insult?

then he made that post about being excited for the yinzers to "die off", and this thread, and revealed that he does in fact have contempt for working class people who grew up in and near pittsburgh. so that clears that up.

LOL!! I didn't care if they won and what happened during the game and I'm a native to the area.

You should have been living in Boston on October 17, 2003. Although, to be fair, the whole metro area was too stunned to talk about anything on that day. The endless discussions didn't really start until the day after.

If "Yinzer" means "obsessive sports fan", then you can find them everywhere in this country.

Me, three! I'm glad when they do well, but couldn't be bothered to watch a game.

Late to the party, but a note based on personal experience: out of my 4 siblings and myself who grew up in the area, 2 of us are yinzers and 3 are not. Interestingly, the 2 who are yinzers did not attend higher education. One is my fav brother and one is my least fav.

Nope. I'm happy if they do well but it doesn't affect my mood or Monday if they lose.
