It should be the entire length of the Mall...from Target to at least Beatty or even Penn Circle W. and have Highland and Whitfield run right through it with ROW given to Pedestrian crossing.

Works for me! I've loved pedestrian streets like that in Europe. The specific area I was talking about could still be a central square of sorts.

Broad street worked great for VIA last year as pedestrian only:

It is definitely exciting to imagine a whole annual series of events like VIA in Broad Street (similar to the series of events in Market Square).

This kind of thing has been tried before in Pittsburgh. Over in Carnegie, when I was a teenager and young adult, Main Street was blocked off from Broadway for like 4 -5 blocks. There were a lot of retailers, including McCrorys and Murphys and the Carnegie Cinema, several bars and restaurants.

Actually it was a pretty attractive space which including a pedestrian only bridge across Chartiers Creek.

Didn't work out, you can drive it now..

People like to park in front of a place I think, here in Pittsburgh.

Broad Street is not wide like Main Street.....Broad Street as about as wide as Forbes Ave leading up to MSQ...

I agree that Wide 2-way Streets don't work well as Ped Malls...But something narrow like Broad with Retail and Activity on both sides it could work redoing the street Piazza style like MSQ. Plus Broad Street already has a parking area that big lot around MCD and the Police Station.

Obviously whether or not a given pedestrian zone will work depends on a lot of very specific factors. I think this location would be promising because of the potential resemblances to Market Square, including the fact there are lots of streets/parking nearby, along with good transit access (even more so when the new station is built), and potentially a lot more local users in walking distance (once the Wallace/Highland and hotel projects mature).
