Your trip sounds great Hopes! We went up that way once, through Canada (driving from Denver). I'd def recommend Vancouver Island. Victoria, BC is great too. There's a wonderful museum with Native American stuff there. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it any more. I wasn't as impressed with Vancouver, the city, but we were there on July 1 (Canada Day) and saw some fireworks. That was cool.

Since you asked about others' vacay plans, we just got back yesterday from the Grand Canyon/Utah Canyonlands. From Pgh, you'd probably have to fly to Phoenix, but it's worth it. If I can figure out how to post pictures, I'll do so. There were nice hiking trails around the rim. Once you get on a trail, there are hardly any other people around. Saw elk, deer and squirrels; ravens; lots of wildflowers.

My wife and I took a similar trip up the coast a few years ago, though it was more of a straight shot up with one night between San Francisco and Portland. If you like Victorian architecture, you'd have to stop in Eureka, CA, as the old town area has remained largely intact since the late 1800s, plus there's the utterly gorgeous Carson Mansion.

I'd stay one night in Eureka and then have the two nights in Oregon. The redwoods can be experienced in a day without trouble.

Poking my head in this thread even though I can only dream of a vacation at the moment... ugh.

Anyway, if on this trip you were planning to go to any winery up in Napa, I'd suggest the most bizarre one I've ever been to: Jarvis. The wine is good (not the best in the area) but you're not going for the wine. You're going because the owners are truly eccentric and the tour is a bit, um, different. They have separate bedrooms in the cave.

It's by appointment only.
