Here's a map if the continuous bad parts of Garfield, East Liberty, Larimer, Lincoln, Homewood, East Hills, Wilkinsburg & Penn Hills. 116 of the 502 reported homicides from 2008-February, 2013 occurred in the highlighted parts of the neighborhoods listed above. They call it the "body bag" home to the "casket kids". They call it this not only because the consistently high number of murders, but because kids who grow up there knowing many people put in a casket before their respective times. (link below)

Wow, East Liberty is more active than I thought it would be.

Also, all of the highlighted parts of the Body Bag excluding the East Hills will probably exceed their respective recorded neighborhood homicides from a ten year period
For example from 1997-20007
64 homicides occured in Homewood
51 homicides occurred in all of Wilkinsburg, PA
31 homicides occurred in all Penn Hills, PA
21 homicides occurred in Larimer
20 homicides occurred in all of the East Hills
18 homicides occurred in all of East Liberty
17 homicides occurred in Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar
16 homicides occurred in all of Garfield

Seven in Northern East Liberty that's highlighted in the map, and 3 in the part by Larimer. However one was "justified", as it was commited by the Zone 5 police.
3 North St Clair St
3 North Euclid Ave
1 off Peabody Park
1 East Liberty Gardens
1 Enright Court
1 Omega Place
(Not all of East Lib's recent homicides are in the highlighted part... Ex one on Stanton in 2008 and a several in Central East Liberty)
All can be found here http://newsinteractive.post-gazette.com/homicide/

This is why I don't think East Liberty is ready to be recommended as a place to live to anyone but urban pioneers .

It's a visit during the daytime sort of place for most people at this point.

Not so bad south of Penn, but I agree with Hopes, I'd not recommend it to a woman who said safety was a priority and she might be alone at night. A lot of that stuff is hidden because the worse parts are tucked behind the busway where noone has any reason to go, but a lot of neighborhoods are like that.

It's worth noting that out of the whole area that Uptown Kid discussed, only four of the murders were of white people. Presumably the vast majority of black people murdered had personal beefs with the shooter as well, given most are within the age group most likely to be involved in gang violence (few people are still involved in gangs by 30, essentially no one except very high-ranking gang bosses are by 40).

Which goes back to what's always been said about Pittsburgh ghettos. The amount of random predatory violence is actually not very high (not much higher than anywhere else in Pittsburgh). The difference is "rough justice" which is another thing entirely.

I do believe East Liberty is heading in a safer direction and will be a totally different place in 10 to 20 years. For now, I prefer to be careful who I recommend it to. East Liberty is appropriate for urban pioneers or like the guy who said "we live in New Orleans so how bad can it be" but not for a women who states she is concerned about neighborhood safety because she will be alone at night.
