interesting to see him taking this approach!

Kickstarting a Braddock restaurant: Kevin Sousa's Superior Motors - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Quote:
Following an emerging trend among restaurateurs, Mr. Sousa is turning to the wider audience of the Internet to help him front renovations for a planned restaurant on Braddock Avenue. Location: the ground floor of the former Superior Motors car dealership that the mayor and his wife, Gisele, currently are renovating into a loft.
To coincide with the Dec. 6 premiere of the drama "Out of the Furnace" starring Christian Bale and Woody Harrelson, which filmed several scenes in Braddock, Mr. Sousa just kicked off a Kickstarter campaign to get the new space up and running. His goal is to raise $250,000 in 33 days.

I find it hard to believe that a banker won't lend Kevin Sousa money to open the place. With his track record someone would loan him the money.

robrobrob, if you read the Kickstarter statement he explains why they are taking this approach.

Man, UKyank, I would totally throw down my $400 if we could get the manpower needed behind a City Data 10k donation to this thing. It would make for the most epic internet forum meet and greet of all time.

I suspect he purposely wants to raise the funds this way as opposed to going to banks. Plus, hey, I think a bank is not exactly going to be all for opening in Braddock, track record or no. The idea is to purposely open it in Braddock, not just anywhere.

I did read through his kickstarter statement and I really didn't see it. However, I did see a statement that said something like banks haven't historically lent money to Braddock.

This restaurant better be one hell of a destination eatery. They won't get squat from the walkup crowd.

Banks would have a hard time justifying getting a free meal as a return on their investment regardless of the amount. A much easier proposition for the kickstarter crowd.

Sousa's fans seem to follow him anywhere so far.
