Thanks a lot!

Lived in Pittsburgh area in the late 1980's.

Good:

Cost of living is still reasonable.
Crime is better than many areas.
Friendly people who care.
Access to some very good colleges.
Great sports town.

Bad:

One of the highest property taxes in the nation in Allegheny county due to schools - these are good schools but I lived in Butler county - just north of this to avoid this high cost - and the schools there were fine.

Still many depressed economic suburbs.

Winter

Distance from the ocean but I would go to the great lakes from time to time.

One thing that I have noticed since being back that is bad are grocery store prices. SIGNIFICANTLY higher than Dallas. I have never seen 12 packs of Coke in Dallas for $4.99! Granted, I shop for the 3 for $9 deals, but, they were never more than $3.89 regularly priced.

Winter. Gheesh!
Pittsburgh's winters are a piece of cake!
Try living in Buffalo or the south towns. Or Syracuse.
Now THAT'S a winter!

Who are you addressing this to? I'm in Arizona and counting the days when I can be back on the east coast again!

I will happily arrive in July. I already own a home there (in Venetia) and cannot wait to make it my permanent home soon!

I'm only aware of some flurries. So far, so good!

The Good:
1. The topography - with all the gorgeous hills and rivers and architecture, it's really amazing. A friend of mine from Chicago says it reminds him of Camelot, where Pittsburgh is the castle and all the outlining neighborhoods that are along the hills with trees everywhere and across rivers are the townsmen. Kinda cute, I thought. He loves Pittsburgh, btw.

2. The rich culture for a city of it's size with world class museums, symphonies, ballets, theatre, zoo, etc.

3. The people! I think Pittsburgher's are some of the most genuinely helpful, concerned, and hard-working people in the country.

4. The imagination! Between all the higher education facilities in and around the city, pumping out artists, musicians, architects, health care professionals, robotics, and advanced research majors specifically, there is ALWAYS something interesting and crazy going on. From a new green-certified building, to an arts festival in shadyside, to UPMC performing the first successful >INSERT OPERATION HERE<, to CMU making the newest, most advanced robot and artificial intelligence.

5. I love downtown. It has extremely beautiful architecture and is walkable. It's compact and is experiencing a resurgence!! I live and walk downtown a lot for lunch!!

The Bad
1. Local politics could be doing a lot more to improve what needs improving. They are fractured in many ways.

2. Job growth is sluggish in many areas (however, it is growing fairly heavily in the most viable fields in the country)

3. Due to the unique and beautiful topography, the infrastructure needs constant improvement. There seems to be construction everywhere all the time and yet not enough improvement is ever done!

4. The property taxes in Allegheny county are far too high and the teacher's union is too powerful.

5. Although I find plenty to do as an adult, the city isn't a "hip and trendy" city and I would like to see fashion and interior design become more important to the average Pittsburgher.
