you have to give peduto credit for thinking out of the box. people once mocked the Eiffel Tower, after all.
And again, if you think requesting a structure to be installed at the head of a trail is "visionary" and "thinking outside of the box", you're very simple minded. On top of that, it will never happen.

I rode the Pittsburgh to DC trail in Oct and mile 0 doesn't start at the Washington Monument either. It is in Georgetown. So the North Shore would be a fine place for this. Complete the ride at the Point and see the Monument across the river.

Although just rebuilding the scaffolding with nothing inside seems a bit strange, I think a smaller replica of the monument itself would be cool.

And my obligatory photos from the trip....

It's beautiful. I'd love having it in Pittsburgh. We might have a shot at getting it since Obama likes Pittsburgh.

Unrelated but mentioned in the OP article, I like his recommending Obama utilize Pittsburgh as a laboratory.

Right...but pretty soon you'd be looking at real money, which the City isn't in a position to provide. What I liked most about the proposal was the ability to do this, presumably, without much cost.

I'd love to know more about your trip, as far as where you stayed, how many miles you rode per day, etc.

I feel like it would be odd along the river. How about having it in Allegheny Commons? Ideally without Allegheny Center, perhaps as part of a redevelopment plan for that...

It just want to point out that it's not going to look as cool lit up without the beige stone background of the monument.

What about using the top of this "mini Washington Monument" as one of the ends of the proposed zip line from Mt. Washington? Cyclists arriving from The District could walk across the Smithfield Street Bridge to Station Square for lunch, ride the incline up to Grandview, and zipline down to the monument! Otherwise this could also anchor part of the "One Grandview" project and be the "Mt. Washington Monument"!
