I think this is also why IKEA has been so hesitant to open a location in either Columbus or Cleveland (or even Akron or Canton to split the difference a bit). I've heard that a large chunk of the Pittsburgh IKEA's business happens to hail from Ohio already.

On the other hand what about a Bass Pro Shop? Do we have any of those nearby?

When I worked at Presby in Oakland I only knew of one regular client of ours who lived in Weirton, WV (and another two who lived in Steubenville and Youngstown, respectively). I wonder if Weirton can successfully reinvigorate itself by trying to market itself as an affordable bedroom community of Pittsburgh?

I think it can and will some it's already cheaper to live there of course and you're right when the beltway is done it will change commute times and traffic patterns for someone trying to get to a job hub like Southpointe. When the beltway is done you'll be able to get to there from Weirton/Steubenville in about 35 minutes. The first part of the southern beltway (576) is already used by people from that area that work around the airport. I think it has the potential to effect a number of communities and not only people from Weirton/Steubenville will use it but people from the Wheeling area as well. Large companies that factor in airport access and cost of land will make business parks like Southpointe even more attractive to them.

Bass Pro has been wanting to build in SWPA for years. From what I understand the original plan was to put one around the Meadowlands Casino area which is very possible due to the amount of earth that has been moved around there in the past few years.

I hope they do the Southern beltway. Every time I fly home I have to take that damn 79 South to 70 East nightmare route through Washington then on to Uniontown and then the same way back to the airport a few days later.

Another step would be to finally change Rte22 to be (officially) 65 MPH. It's already Interstate grade all the way out to Robinson.

We have driven on the Mon Fayette expressway once before, and it is quite scary how little traffic you see on this road. I would hate to be involved in an accident on this road because I doubt it is ever patrolled by police. The Southern Beltway would help decrease the traffic on I-79 through West Virginia into Washington County and past the airport. When we reached the expressesways current terminus at 51, traffic was completely gridlocked because of a disabled truck in the middle of the streets in Uniontown or wherever that is.

Here is an article about the project from the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. It says they are "reigniting" plans to build the beltway.

an interesting article about how highways destroyed neighborhoods, in many cases permanently disfiguring them

If you look at the comments on the article I posted the link to, it seems like everyone feels the SB is another useless project.

Everyone? There's like 4 people and a guy that looks like a skinny Carrot Top that doesn't lift weights. Those people have no idea what they're talking about and must never drive on 376W or have seen the development in the areas that it's going to connect to.

Anything that might get some people off the Parkway West is OK in my book . . .

That is the reason why I put the eye roll at the end of my post. The Parkway West has some of the worst driving in the entire northeastern region of the country. On the day after New Years, we were driving back from the Knoxville, TN area. (My relatives live up there.) There was an accident on the Parkway East near the Squirrel Hill area. The road was blocked, which caused traffic to be completely backed in both directions up from there all the way to the I-79 interchange on the Parkway West. Luckily, I have cellular data on my iPad and it took us on a detour.

I also remember when there was a lot do controversy surrounding the Route 28 expansion and the demolition of the former Saint Nicholas Church. The auto shop guy from down the street refused to give up his business, the police came in and evicted him.
