Despite what posters will say about cutting corners to save money - Don't. Spend $1000 or more a month on rent to live in a good area in the city. Also, get as new as you can. Pittsburgh has an overwhelming amount of old housing stock. People are paying crazy high amounts to live in dumps. I've discovered that not sharing utilities and having a designated parking spot are considered bonus features.

Of course a designated parking spot is a bonus feature. Land isn't free, especially not land that is relatively flat and located in the places people want to live and work. If you want exclusive access to a piece of ground, you have to pay for it.

Actually with new units in most other cities, parking spots are a given. Heck, here in Pittsburgh, level floors, closets, and doors that shut are also considered bonuses.

It's not a given. It's a subsidy to those with cars from those without and it is usually legally mandated. One of just many ways cars are subsidized.

Then Pittsburgh needs to get it's act together. The city is behind the times.

It depends on the city, and it depends on the neighborhood and housing type. there are lots of other northeastern cities with neighborhoods where street parking is the main option.

Default Downtown Cultural Distict...

The Downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District would be an excellent option for you because it is becoming more affordable to live Downtown. It's exciting living in Downtown Pittsburgh and $1000 a month will get you a small modern apartment with a few a amenities. You can even bring your little dog as I am working hard to get a bonafide dog park.

Its not behind the times, its old. Old cities sometimes have narrower streets and are more congested. It's not like you can just create parking out of thin air, when there is no room to put a lot. I had to parallel park at my high school every day in NJ. The trade-off is a lot of these neighborhoods have more within walking distance than those in newly developed areas.

I agree that these old houses need to be torn down, renovated or deemed not fit for rental property.

OP, welcome to our beautiful city.

Do consider the Pennsylvanian. It is a bit out of your price range, but if you can deal with a studio, you can get one for around $1000 (according to their website). Their website shows a beautiful pool, and a very well equipped gym.

It is close to the train station, and just a short walk to the heart of the Cultural District - Penn Avenue between 10th street and 6th Street, where there are a lot of restaurants, and some very nicely dressed, cool people, ice cream, and the arts galore.
