Most suburbanites are chained to their SUVs and are quite content sitting for two hours each day in gridlock commuting and running errands while texting. Why on Earth would they want to pay higher taxes to support more advanced cycling infrastructure in the city that would undoubtedly not benefit the majority of them? In similar fashion we city-dwellers like to bellyache when our tax dollars go to fund exurban highway expansion, so I can see their point I guess in not appreciating paying for things they won't use. It just sucks that this city will never be a nice place to live as long as our infrastructure is second-world.
Anybody chained to their SUV sitting in gridlock for 2 hours just needs to turn the key/press the button and press down on the pedal on the right.

Bicycle theft in Amsterdam

Amsterdam Police and the Cyclists’ Union estimate that each year between 50.000 and 80.000 bikes are stolen.
Mind you: 58 percent of bicycles are stolen from in front of someone’s own house, and most bikes thefts take place during the daytime.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cycling_in_Amsterdam
Bicycle theft in Amsterdam is widespread: in 2005, about 54,000 bicycles were stolen and every year between 12,000 and 15,000 bicycles are retrieved from the canals.

450,000 bikes stolen in 2014; only 25% reported to police

Other types of theft are also extremely high in the Netherlands, including pickpocketing.

1. That is very misleading. TONS of bikes are taken by some drunk person and just left somewhere. It happens.
2. There are countless bikes there, so while the number sounds huge, consider the amount of bikes stolen.

3. Lock your bike over there are you will have it when you go get it. People don't lock their bikes much over that way with a U lock

4. In the US three people are killed by a gun per hour and almost seven people are shot every 60 minutes.

Nuff said.. NEXT!

Bluecarebear, please stop trolling. You were warned to stop before, maybe doing so in public will have a better effect.
Now, back to the thread.
Edit: also everyone, please get back on topic. Crime in Europe is not the topic of this thread.
Yac.

I don't have a dog in this fight but this is a very strange statement. Just because the thief is drunk doesn't make your property any less stolen.

True, but over there it is different. Some drunk person feels as though he is borrowing the bike and just leaves it somewhere. Bike gets returned when reported. It is odd it happens, but it does. In Pittsburgh, which has a lot of bike theft considering the amount of cyclists. I don't have statistics, but per bike, our theft is most likely MUCH higher. Our bikes get stolen from some idiot to support their drug habit. That is reality. They often don't get returned, unless they get busted trying to sell the bike. People aren't reselling bikes over in Scandinavian/Nordic countries as much as here. Sure it happens, but over here that is what it is all about. Drug money.
