The tracks are still there, why not use them?

Think Norfolk Southern owns the right of way these days. Think someone pitched a commuter rail idea to them a few years ago. They weren't much interested.

I used to ride the McKeesport Flyer, I believe it was called, to Pittsburgh. I grew up on the trains, loved it. Too bad they aren't around like they used to be, great way to travel.

I think I posted this link once before somewhere but I'm always amazed by the amount of commuter rail service Pittsburgh once had.

This is very cool - great footage. Great industrial landscape, and I especially like the little trolley scooting across the trestle in North Braddock. Hard to imagine a time when everyone either walked, took a trolley or a train.

What a great video, thanks for posting! i take the train from Pgh to Philly pretty often, and it takes these tracks; I always ask to be left off at the Turtle Creek Station, but the conductors look at me like I'm demented, lol. I really am living in the wrong era, sigh.

Gotta say, Pittsburgh looks much better now. So much debris everywhere and everything looks so unkept. Cool video. Thanks for sharing.

I also saw a lack of vegetation in the video, maybe due to the air pollution or because they just mowed everything down to build the factories. It was definitely the height of industrialization before any EPA or environmental regulations. Those were the days when people said, "If it's smokey, that means we're working."
