Nice. Thanks for the insight!

(I may be moving over in that general area later this year)

This may be a silly reply, but have you considered a different route? Perhaps 376 could be avoided. In a prior Pittsburgh incarnation, I provided staff relief and was required to travel to a multitude of locations and often was surprised to find routes that made absolutely no sense on paper and would save 1/2 the time, once tried, when compared to a conventional route. If you could get to the Veterans Bridge and take 279 that merges into 79 that would be against rush hour I believe....I had numerous ways to get into the city or through Shadyside or Oakland or Squirrel Hill dependent upon my destination.

To the OP - I lived in Southside for two years and commuted to Cranberry (Cranberry Woods). The average commute was about 27 minutes - Southside is actually very convenient to most areas of the city/suburbs (as far as city neighborhoods go). Birmingham Bridge, to fifth ave, to gist street, to boulevard of the allies is the way to go.

I uh... third Mt. Washington.

Traffic isn't too bad since you're over the tunnels and don't have to go through them. You'd be travelling opposite the heavy flow of traffic both ways (the 579/Liberty Bridge interchange can back up a little bit in the evenings but isn't too bad - plus you can always take 51 around the backside of the mountain over the West End Bridge right onto 65/279N). Plus you're in a central location to enjoy all things that are city within a few minutes' walk, incline ride, T ride, bus, or drive. Shiloh Street has some nice amenities as well.

All the while adhering to the posted 25MPH speed limit through that section of Lawrenceville which is tight residential streets and alleys. I hope.

You know, I don't know how people actually drive faster than 25 on any street in Lawrenceville. Sometimes I feel like I'm FLYING and I hit my brakes and notice I'm only going like 18MPH. 30-35? 40?! There's a stop sign every 50 feet. What's the point anyway?

Not that I ever see other people doing that either, mind.

My point is the practice of taking the back streets to avoid the major arteries, at the risk of hitting a kid is not to be taken lightly. Ask anybody who lives in the East End about the j-holes cutting through the neighborhoods to avoid Braddock avenue. Stop signs may as well be yield signs, very few people adhere to the posted limit. They don't live there so they have no personal stake in the neighborhood.

A "kid", as you put it, is not at risk of being hit, because another resident ( Squirrel Hill in the OPs case) of the city might choose to utilize his city streets. That child is at risk on the city street because that is where she lives; hopefully has parents that have taught her how to be a city citizen on the look out for other people using the streets.

Are there now unwritten rules for use of the city streets for drivers?

IMO ,ALL drivers, everywhere need to follow rules of the road and be aware of children, suburban, city or other. And all children, if they are old enough to be out without a parent need to follow safety rules and exhibit an understanding of streets, which are primarily for cars and sidewalks are for people.

I agree comletely. But it is on the driver, not the kid if there is an accident. Actually I do not agree with you but it would be off topic. Carry on.
