These pictures were taken today along Beechwood Boulevard and Phillips Avenue near Frick Park. See this map for the general location. My camera is cheap, plus I compressed the images to reduce their size, so please don't expect high quality photos. There are a lot of brick homes in Pittsburgh, and Squirrel Hill is no exception. More information about Squirrel Hill can be found here and here. There is no affiliation between me and the posted links.

Wow thank you for sharing the pictures! {Sigh} I love Squirrel Hill!

Totally unrelated....but I would love to take pictures of that synagogue in East Liberty off of -- what is it Negley? Before they tear it down or something.

Does Squirrel Hill have a high Jewish population? Or is it a good mix of people?

I do not know the numbers; but overall Squirrel Hill is relatively diverse -- especially as you move towards the areas around Carnegie Mellon and heading towards the surrounding neighborhoods.

However Squirrel Hill is the center of the Jewish community in Pittsburgh today. The majority of Torah-observant (Orthodox) Jews in Pittsburgh live there and so do many other types of Jews. It may be that more than half of the residents are Jewish in some way. But when you compare Squirrel Hill with some other places like the Flatbush area of Brooklyn; or Monsey, NY or Hollywood/Hallendale, FL....Squirrel Hill doesn't feel so overwhelmingly Jewish like those places do (I mean Hallendale, FL has a public school that teaches Hebrew in the curriculum...Squirrel Hill doesn't have anything like that).

Looks almost exactly like parts of Uptown Harrisburg, which ironically is Harrisburg's Jewish neighborhood (though most of the Jewish population has moved a few miles north into nearby Susquehanna township).

Once again, very nice pictures. I always love seeing the brick Foursquares in particular (the ones in your driving space photo), since we currently live in one ourselves (only walking space, but we have an alley for the garages).

I think the answer is: both. Squirrel Hill is actually a huge neighborhood by East End standards, with something like 25,000 residents in 10,500 households as of the 2000 census, and covering a lot of territory. So, that leaves room for both a very large Jewish population (I've been told something like 1/3 of the Jewish people in the region live in Squirrel Hill, making up around 1/2 of Squirrel Hill's population), as well as a diverse mix of other people. Indeed, I get the sense that in addition to Jewish people, there are also growing South Asian and Southeast Asian populations, along with an otherwise typical Pittsburgh mix.
