This is a cultural travesty.
Wow. Humphries is like in his mid 70s? Yes, divulge the name please. Jazz in the basement of the establishment would generate THAT much noise? Jeez Louise.

Yet another example of a single NIMBY holding back North Side progress.

I dunno; looking at the place it’s surrounded on all sides by residential & I can confirm that the place was very loud at times; just seems like a bad location for a loud live music venue

Was it really THAT much of a problem? I've been there to see hard rock bands and by the time I got to the street level for a blast of cool air, I could not hear what was coming from the downstairs space. Could the sound have carried through to adjacent basements?

Wouldn't letting a nuisance bar continue to operate be holding back progress as well? it seems like one of the owners of the new flipped houses would be more likely to complain.

Nobody would care about noise if the bar was another yuppie chain store brewery.

I don't know. My sense is that the people coming into the neighborhood aren't as grumpy about noise abd activity as the people who have been here for a while -- but in the end it sounds like it was mostly one specific jerk, and really anyone can be a jerk without falling into any given pattern.

There aren't any yuppie chains in this area, unless you count the North shore, and as we have pointed out a million times the North Shore isn't really part of the neighborhood because it's on the other side of the highways and has hardly any residential spaces. It's close enough that people who like it can get there quickly, but it's not built into the neighborhood. The businesses in Deutschtown are overwhelmingly small and local, aside from Rita's and Subway.

IIRC didn't the Shadow Lounge close due to one specific jerk complaining about noise as well?

To me it's pretty clear it has nothing to do with noise. If this person was legitimately interested in keeping down noise in the neighborhood they could have been a little more constructive with how they approached this, particularly since the business made solid efforts to solve the problem. Seems to me like they just lodged anonymous complaints because they have it out against the business one way or the other (parking, personal grudge with owner, congregations of groups of people, etc). It's just frustrating to see that attitude in an area that really benefited from James Street Gastropub being there.

when a bar people on here like closes = NIMBYS!
