3 days short of the 50th anniversary of the immaculate reception. What a great man he was.

Wow...as a lifelong Browns fan, I can say he was a great player (I don't know much about what he did outside of football).

A lot. He was such a nice man and a true Pittsburgher. He was a fellow cyclist as well.

Harris remained in Pittsburgh following his retirement, opening a bakery and becoming heavily involved in several charities, including serving as the chairman of "Pittsburgh Promise," which provides college scholarship opportunities for Pittsburgh Public School students.

RIP Franco. You will be missed. I was just listing to him on the radio a couple of days ago. Wonder if he died of a heart attack like his brother Pete?

RIP Franco! I watched the "immaculate reception" live. What a play! In the Pittsburgh sports pantheon, this ranks along with Bill Mazeroski's 9th inning home run against the Yankees in the 1960 world series as the greatest feat in Pittsburgh sports.

I never saw that play live as the game was played on a Monday afternoon and I was in high school. But someone brought a transistor radio to class and I heard it live.

people think that was the end of the game, too! The Raiders finished out the clock on offense, unsuccessfully, but IN steelers field, correct?

and, isnt there lingering talk about it not being legal? Mark Madden has mentioned this but i havent listen intently enough at any opportunity when he brings it up, even for a few seconds as a jab against the Steelers, who he seems to enjoy hating.

i think it was HE (Madden) who says a Raider or two claims it even hit the ground.

WHY WASNT THE PLAY EVEN REVIEWED BY THE OFFICIALS????? (just kidding - of course there was no review then).

they went on to lose to the fish in the conference game, but i see that was 21-17, and i know nothing of that game except the score. i wonder if that is a "coulda/shoulda" that the steelers could have won. id love to see that on tape.

i bet even than it could not have possible dawned on anyone what was in store for the remainder of the decade. do you remember if there was an air of excitement the FOLLOWING season, as the september approached? or was it unfathomable that this good fortune could continue for the steelers?
at that time, there was probably NO NFL media saturation, as today, so maybe there was no simmering then boiling over anticipation as we've seen in the summers preceding most seasons of the Roethlisberger era.

do tell! why so quiet, Wells???

I was shocked to hear this. I just ran into Franco Harris on Liberty Ave in Bloomfield a few days ago. He looked like his usual self with no indication of his pending demise. Wow! Life is so short.

I was at the game with my Dad. We got end zone seats at the last minute. It was cold. I'm pretty sure they had to shovel out the stands for the game. I had to keep walking around so my previously frostbitten feet didn't go completely numb.

I don't remember anyone leaving early even though it seemed hopeless at the end. In that play I remember many players trying for the ball. Then it sort of disappeared from my vantage point. Then Franco is running like a bat out of hell and the fans on that end of the field went wild. I didn't really know what happened to the ball until I got home.

It was glorious. And everyone was so happy.

He was just on the radio discussing the immaculate reception and other things and he sounded great and laughing plenty. Always loved Franco. He rode a pretty big bicycle as I remember.

Maybe to remember him, I will make some of his famous lasagna. It is great and has wine in it.

Yes. Franco never seemed like he aged at all and always seemed healthy, vibrant and full of life. Could be perhaps one of the greatest Pittsburghers, right up there with Fred Rogers, Rachel Carson and others.. a class act, humble, etc. Everything you miss in a football player today.
